Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s original was already a major success when Bieber joined a remix released on April 17, 2017. The remix helped carry the song into a broader crossover moment, but the available chart history does not measure how much of that success Bieber caused on his own.
So, what did Justin Bieber do to “Despacito”? He became a featured collaborator on a new version of a song whose original artists had already established its popularity.
Who made “Despacito” before Justin Bieber joined?
Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee released the original “Despacito” before Bieber became involved. Universal Music Canada’s April 2017 announcement credited Fonsi and Daddy Yankee as the artists and described Bieber as the featured artist on the remix (Universal Music Canada). The distinction matters: Bieber joined an existing song rather than originating it.
The remix appeared on April 17, 2017, according to Apple Music’s catalog listing (Apple Music). The Official Charts lists May 18, 2017 as the remix’s first UK chart date; that is a chart-history date, not its release date (Official Charts).

Was “Despacito” already a hit before the remix?
Yes. PBS American Experience’s 2017 retrospective reports that the original had spent 15 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart before the remix was released (PBS American Experience). That makes it inaccurate to say Bieber made the song a hit from zero.
The remix was followed by major chart milestones. PBS reports that it gave Bieber his first No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs and his fifth No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Those are outcomes reported in a 2017 retrospective, not proof that the remix alone caused every subsequent chart result.

What did Bieber’s remix change?
Fonsi credited Bieber with helping the song reach a new level. In an interview with Official Charts, Fonsi said: “He took the song to a different level and opened up new doors for myself and Daddy Yankee” (Official Charts interview).
That is Fonsi’s assessment of the collaboration, not an independent measurement of the remix’s individual effect. The evidence establishes a clear sequence: the original was already topping its genre chart, Bieber then joined the remix, and the song went on to achieve wider chart milestones. It does not isolate how many streams, sales, or chart positions came from the remix alone.

Fonsi told TIME: “I got this call from Justin Bieber that he loved the song and that he wanted to release [the remix of] it in four days” (TIME). This describes Fonsi’s recollection of the remix’s creation, not a separate measure of its impact.
Which “Despacito” records belong to which moment?
Contemporaneous coverage recorded several milestones, but they should be kept tied to their dates and sources rather than treated as current records.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, did Justin Bieber make “Despacito” a hit?
Not in the sense of creating its success from nothing. Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s original had already reached No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs and held that position for 15 weeks before Bieber’s remix was released. Bieber joined afterward, and the remix was part of the song’s later crossover and chart success. Fonsi said the collaboration opened new doors, but the available evidence does not quantify Bieber’s independent causal contribution.
