Kelly Cunningham is Emma Roberts’s mother. The Washington Post reported in 2007 that Roberts’s parents separated when she was a baby and Cunningham had primary custody during her childhood.

Why did Emma Roberts block her mother on Instagram?
In 2020, Roberts said she was trying to keep her pregnancy low-key when Cunningham replied to fans’ congratulatory comments on Instagram. Cunningham had mistaken a tabloid report for Roberts’s own announcement. Roberts said she learned what happened while on a plane and asked her mother to stop. She temporarily blocked Cunningham on Instagram.
Roberts described the episode on Jimmy Kimmel Live!; ABC News reported her account. “It’s been an Instagram war with my mother that I never saw coming,” she said, calling the incident “a disaster.” She also said they “kind of laughed” about it afterward and joked, “It’s a good story to tell the baby.” The story describes a temporary argument and block, not evidence of a lasting feud.
What did Roberts say about her mother’s support?
In a January 2022 Tatler interview, Roberts spoke warmly about Cunningham’s help after her son Rhodes was born. “She’s pretty much been with me non-stop since Rhodes was born,” she said. Roberts explained that her mother cared for Rhodes while she worked on a film, allowing her to be fully present on set: “Knowing that she was there to take amazing care of Rhodes meant that I could be fully present on set.”
Roberts also reflected on her mother’s support for her childhood acting ambitions, saying, “My mum recognised that, which I admire because I’m sure she took judgement from some people.” These remarks document affection and practical support at the time of the interview.

Are Emma Roberts and her mother close now?
The public accounts cited here support a picture of childhood closeness, a short-lived disagreement in 2020, and affection and practical support described in 2022. They do not verify whether Roberts and Cunningham are currently close, estranged, or in conflict.
