Pet Sematary grew from an experience Stephen King has described from his family’s life in Orrington, Maine: his daughter’s cat, Smucky, was killed on a nearby road, and the family buried the cat in a children’s pet cemetery. King said the story through the death of the child in the road was true to life. The resurrection and supernatural horror that follow belong to the fiction.
What inspired Pet Sematary?
King has linked the novel to a period when his family lived in a rented house in Orrington, Maine. In his account, trucks used the road near the house, and the family’s cat Smucky was run over. King recalled: “I did find my daughter’s cat, Smucky, dead in the road, run over.” The Paris Review interview is King’s retrospective account; it should not be mistaken for an independently documented reconstruction of every detail.

A children’s pet cemetery near the home was another part of the real-life context King described. The novel carries that element into its fictional story. King’s official page for the novel introduces the family, its cat and the pet cemetery at the center of the premise.
How much of the story was true?
King drew a specific boundary between the real-life inspiration and the horror plot. In the interview, he said: “Everything in it—up to the point where the little boy is killed in the road—everything is true.” That is King’s description of how the story developed from life; it does not mean that his own child died. The child’s death is part of the novel’s fictional plot.

The real setting King identified was Orrington. The novel takes place in Ludlow, a fictional Maine town. The parallel is the family’s experience with a dangerous road and a pet cemetery—not a claim that the novel’s events happened as written.
What the novel changes
Pet Sematary transforms grief and a child’s encounter with death into supernatural horror. Its ancient burial ground, resurrection and consequences are fictional. The contrast is central to the origin story: King connected the emotional and domestic circumstances to his own life, then carried them into an invented narrative. The publisher’s listing identifies the book as King’s novel and describes its fictional premise.
