Hulu’s Under the Bridge is a scripted drama based on the real 1997 killing of 14-year-old Reena Virk in British Columbia and Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 nonfiction book about the case. The series draws on real people and events, but it also changes how some of them are represented: its police character Cam Bentland is a composite, and Godfrey did not assist the actual police investigation in the way the show depicts.
Is Hulu’s Under the Bridge based on a true story?
Yes. Hulu describes the series as based on the true story of Reena Virk, a 14-year-old killed in British Columbia in 1997, and on Rebecca Godfrey’s book. Hulu’s official synopsis says the story is told “Through the eyes of Godfrey (Riley Keough) and a local police officer (Lily Gladstone),” as it explores the young girls accused of the murder. That is the platform’s description of the drama, not independent verification of every scene or plot detail. Hulu’s official series description

The Television Academy identifies Godfrey’s 2005 book, Under the Bridge: The True Story of the Murder of Reena Virk, as the series’ source. Hachette’s catalogue also lists the book under that title. The book is the nonfiction source behind the adaptation; it is not the television series. Television Academy · Hachette catalogue
Who was Reena Virk?
Reena Virk was a 14-year-old from British Columbia whose killing in 1997 became the subject of Godfrey’s book and the Hulu drama. A central legal source for the case is the Supreme Court of Canada’s 2009 decision in R. v. Ellard, an appeal concerning Kelly Ellard. The decision discusses the case and evidence from the trial record; it is an appellate judgment, not a complete narrative of every event connected to the killing. Supreme Court of Canada: R. v. Ellard (2009)

That distinction matters when comparing a dramatization with the real case. A court decision can establish what was before the court and what the court decided on appeal. It should not be treated as confirmation of every line of dialogue, private interaction, or scene shown in a television drama.
What parts of Under the Bridge are real, and what was changed?
The core premise, Reena’s identity and age, the 1997 setting, and Godfrey’s book as the adaptation’s source are grounded in the real case and the series’ published descriptions. But the series is a scripted adaptation, not a scene-by-scene reconstruction. TIME identifies two important departures involving the show’s central perspective. TIME’s account of the series’ changes

Cam Bentland is a composite character
The local police officer played by Lily Gladstone is named Cam Bentland. TIME reports that Bentland is a composite character rather than a direct portrayal of one real officer. The series therefore uses her as a dramatic point of view; viewers should not assume each of her actions or conversations corresponds to a specific officer’s documented conduct.
Godfrey’s role in the investigation is dramatized
Riley Keough plays Rebecca Godfrey, but TIME reports that the real Godfrey did not aid police in the investigation as she does in the series. Godfrey’s connection to the case was as a journalist and author: she later researched and wrote the nonfiction book on which the show is based. The distinction is between her later reporting and book research, and the active investigative role the drama gives her.

Dialogue and scenes are not automatically historical evidence
The Supreme Court decision offers a legal record of particular proceedings and trial evidence. It does not validate every dramatized exchange or event. For details not established in the cited court material, it is more accurate to describe them as part of the show’s portrayal than to label them confirmed facts about the case.
What is the book behind the series?
Godfrey’s Under the Bridge: The True Story of the Murder of Reena Virk is the nonfiction book identified as the series’ source by Hulu and the Television Academy, and listed in Hachette’s catalogue. Readers looking for the book rather than the adaptation can search for Under the Bridge Rebecca Godfrey book. Availability and editions may vary by country and bookseller.
