The True Story Behind Guy Ritchie’s Docuseries The Diamond Heist

The Diamond Heist is based on a real, foiled 2000 robbery attempt at London’s Millennium Dome—not the later Antwerp vault heist.

Guy Ritchie’s Netflix docuseries The Diamond Heist is about a real, foiled robbery attempt at London’s Millennium Dome on 7 November 2000. A gang planned to storm the De Beers diamond exhibition with a bulldozer, seize its headline jewels and escape by speedboat down the Thames. Police were waiting; the display case was never breached and no diamonds were stolen.

Which real-life heist does the series cover?

The story takes place at the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, southeast London, where a De Beers diamond exhibition was on display. Netflix describes a gang planning a ram-raid and a speedboat getaway. Its UK listing presents the series as a three-episode limited documentary following the would-be robbers, the police investigation and the approach of the planned raid. Netflix’s official synopsis and UK title page establish the series premise and episode framing.

This was an attempted robbery, not a successful diamond theft. It is also distinct from the 2003 Antwerp diamond vault robbery and from Netflix’s separate documentary Stolen: Heist of the Century.

What were the gang trying to steal?

The exhibition’s central attraction was the Millennium Star, a reported 203.04-carat flawless diamond. A secondary case summary estimates the stone’s value at £200 million at the time. Netflix, by contrast, describes the gang’s planned haul as worth £350 million. Those figures refer to different things: the former is an estimate for the Millennium Star alone; the latter is Netflix’s stated value for the planned haul. Neither is the value of goods stolen, because the robbery was stopped.

How did police stop the planned raid?

A secondary account of the case says police received intelligence about a planned robbery, identified suspected gang members and developed an operation called Operation Magician. Officers reportedly surveilled visits to the Dome and preparations for the Thames escape. To protect the exhibition, police replaced displayed gems with replicas and concealed officers behind a false wall. The account says arrests followed as the gang moved toward the display; the case summary describes the attempt being stopped before the display case was breached.

The specific operational details here come from a secondary case summary, rather than a directly reviewed police or court record. Netflix’s episode descriptions independently frame the police investigation as a central part of the series and say officers connected the gang to an earlier crime before suspecting a more ambitious plan.

What does the documentary’s framing tell viewers?

The story’s tension comes from the gap between an audacious plan and the police operation already closing in on it. Netflix sums up that premise with the line: “There’s just one tiny problem: the Flying Squad are watching.” That is Netflix’s synopsis wording, not an independently verified quotation from a participant.

For a book-length account, Dome Raiders: How Scotland Yard Foiled the Greatest Robbery of All Time by Detective Superintendent Jon Shatford and William Doyle is identified as a follow-up on the case. The available information does not establish that the series is based on the book.

What remains unclear from the available accounts?

The sources cited here do not establish the final convictions or exact sentences for every defendant, so this article does not give a sentencing breakdown. The operational narrative beyond Netflix’s own description relies on the secondary case summary; it should not be mistaken for a direct quotation from police files or court records.
