James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (2021) sends a coerced team of Belle Reve prisoners to the island nation of Corto Maltese. Margot Robbie plays Harley Quinn, Idris Elba is Bloodsport, and John Cena is Peacemaker; Viola Davis returns as the government official controlling their mission, Amanda Waller. This guide is for Gunn’s film, not the 2016 Suicide Squad.
What is the 2021 film about?
The film is a superhero action adventure based on DC characters. Its central setup is Task Force X: prisoners under government control are sent to remote Corto Maltese on a dangerous mission. Colonel Rick Flag accompanies the squad on the ground, while Amanda Waller oversees the operation.

The ensemble mixes familiar figures such as Harley Quinn with less familiar villains. Writer-director James Gunn told DC that he considered many characters and chose them in part for what they brought to the film. He described the story as being “first and foremost about characters above all else.”
Who plays the central characters?
| Character | Actor | Place in the story |
|---|---|---|
| Harley Quinn | Margot Robbie | A member of the squad and one of its best-known figures. |
| Bloodsport | Idris Elba | A squad member on the Corto Maltese mission. |
| Peacemaker | John Cena | A squad member on the mission. |
| Amanda Waller | Viola Davis | The official overseeing Task Force X. |
| Colonel Rick Flag | Joel Kinnaman | The colonel on the ground with the team. |
| Captain Boomerang | Jai Courtney | A member of the squad. |
DC’s interview with Gunn identifies Davis as returning in the role of Waller and Kinnaman and Courtney as returning in their respective roles. That distinguishes these characters from the film’s newly introduced squad figures without suggesting that the movie’s versions match every detail of their comic-book histories.

| Character | Actor | Role in the ensemble |
|---|---|---|
| Ratcatcher 2 | Daniela Melchior | A squad member. |
| King Shark | Sylvester Stallone (voice); Steve Agee (performance) | A squad member. Cinemark associates both performers with the character. |
| Polka-Dot Man | David Dastmalchian | A squad member; Gunn has described the character as having a tragic backstory beneath the joke-like reputation. |
| Savant | Michael Rooker | A squad member. |
| Thinker | Peter Capaldi | |
| Blackguard | Not stated in the cited cast-role listings | A squad member named in DC’s synopsis. |
| Javelin | Not stated in the cited cast-role listings | A squad member named in DC’s synopsis. |
| Savant | Michael Rooker | A squad member. |
| Weasel | Not stated in the cited cast-role listings | A character named in DC’s interview. |
| TDK | Not stated in the cited cast-role listings | A character named in DC’s interview. |
| Mongal | Not stated in the cited cast-role listings | A character named in DC’s interview. |
DC’s official film page names Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and Harley Quinn among the squad. Its interview with Gunn also names Thinker, Weasel, TDK, Mongal and Polka-Dot Man. The cast-role sources used here do not establish every performer pairing, so unverified minor-role credits are not guessed.
Why does the cast include so many unusual characters?
Gunn told DC that some of his character choices were “almost random,” but also said that what each character brought helped determine their place. He described Harley Quinn as an established comics character whose chaotic nature he wanted to honor, while Polka-Dot Man gave him a chance to look beneath a figure treated as a joke. These are film-specific creative choices, not a promise that the movie follows every comic continuity detail.
Gunn also framed the team’s emotional movement around people who struggle to connect with others and find small ways to do so through a tragic experience. That emphasis helps explain why the film’s cast guide is not just a list of powers or aliases: the characters’ contrasting personalities are part of the ensemble’s design.

Yes. Survival outcomes are part of the film’s story, and DC’s interview with Gunn notes that not everyone makes it to the end. This guide names the characters and performers without revealing who survives.
