Those charts covered R&B and hip-hop together, however, and do not establish an official rapper-only top ten. The names below are an editorial selection of ten prominent rappers, not a claim that Billboard ranked them in this exact order.
How to read a “top 10” for 2012
There is no single verified, rapper-exclusive year-end ranking in the available contemporary coverage. Billboard’s recap is the strongest common point of reference, but its Top R&B/Hip-Hop Artists chart includes performers outside rap. A careful list can use year-end chart presence, album performance and contemporary prominence to identify notable rappers without pretending those measures yield a precise official order.

Billboard’s 2012 coverage named Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Drake among familiar artists back in the limelight, and described 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar as acts that made a strong mark. It also cited Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Flo Rida, Young Jeezy, Future, French Montana, Tyga, Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa, Wale and J. Cole among established or rising names with chart presence. Rihanna and Chris Brown also appeared in the broader genre conversation, but are not included here as rappers. This selection focuses on ten rappers from the names supported by that coverage; it is not a numbered ranking.
Ten prominent rappers in 2012
Drake
Drake has the strongest chart case for the year’s leading rapper in this evidence: Billboard’s 2012 year-end recap put him No. 1 among Top R&B/Hip-Hop Artists, while Take Care led its Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums recap. Those are genre-wide chart results, not a rapper-only vote, but together they make him the clearest answer to who stood out commercially.

Kanye West
Kanye West was among the established names Billboard identified as back in the genre’s limelight. The contemporary coverage supports his prominence, though the material available here does not establish an exact rapper-only year-end position for him.
Lil Wayne
Lil Wayne was another familiar artist Billboard placed in its account of the year’s renewed prominence. His inclusion reflects that contemporary recognition, not a claimed position in an official top-ten rapper chart.

Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj was named alongside Drake, Kanye West and Lil Wayne among familiar artists in Billboard’s year-end genre coverage. The recap was for R&B/Hip-Hop overall, so it should not be mistaken for a ranking limited to rappers.
2 Chainz
Billboard described 2 Chainz as one of the acts that made a strong mark in 2012. That makes him a notable choice for a year-in-review list, although the coverage cited here does not assign him a precise annual rank.
Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city was a major commercial breakthrough. A release announcement dated October 31, 2012, citing Nielsen SoundScan, reported more than 241,000 first-week sales and a No. 2 debut on the Billboard 200. That is a debut-week result, not a measure of his full-year sales or a direct comparison with every rapper on this list.
Jay-Z
Jay-Z appears among the established rappers named in contemporary reporting on the year’s chart presence. The cited evidence establishes his relevance to the 2012 landscape but does not provide a comparable exact rank for him.
Rank #4
- Rap Old School Various Artists
Rick Ross
Rick Ross was also identified among the established or rising acts with notable chart presence. His placement in this editorial selection reflects that contemporary visibility rather than a verified spot in a rapper-only top ten.
Flo Rida
Flo Rida was one of the rappers included among the era’s chart-visible names in the contemporary coverage. No exact annual rapper ranking is established for him by the cited material.

Nielsen’s U.S. report covered January 2 through December 30, 2012. It recorded 24.2 million rap album sales, down 11.4% from 27.3 million in 2011, while rap digital album sales rose 14.7%, from 9.3 million to 10.7 million. These figures describe the market, not individual artists, and help explain why album and digital performance are useful but distinct clues to popularity.
For context, Nielsen reported 1.661 billion overall U.S. music purchase transactions in 2012, up 3.1% from the prior year. R&B/Hip-Hop digital track sales totaled 249.3 million, down 4.9%; that category is broader than rap alone and should not be treated as a rap-specific statistic.
Why chart methodology matters
Billboard’s December 22, 2012 feature explained that the revamped Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs methodology incorporated radio airplay, digital-download sales and streaming. Because that formula had been in place for only six weeks, Billboard compiled its 2012 year-end charts using the earlier methodology. So the annual recap reflects the rules in use for most of the chart year, not a full year measured under the new formula.

Nielsen’s report describes SoundScan as measuring recorded-music point-of-sale and BDS as tracking radio airplay and streams. These are different signals, and the resulting chart categories do not make a rapper-only composite ranking. A first-week album debut, a full-year artist recap and a genre-wide digital-track total each answer a different question.
