The True Origin of The Lion King: Was It Based on Kimba?

Disney called The Lion King an original story, but its 1994 release brought comparisons with Kimba. Here’s what the contemporary record says—and what it cannot prove.

The Lion King was developed inside Disney as an original story, according to the studio’s 1994 film notes. The 1994 film’s origins also prompted a public comparison with Osamu Tezuka’s Kimba, the White Lion. Contemporary reporting documented alleged similarities as well as major differences, but does not establish that Disney copied Kimba.

How The Lion King began

Disney’s The Lion King: Film Notes describes the movie as an original story, not an adaptation of a previously published account. A contemporaneous Los Angeles Times report published July 13, 1994 said Disney promotional material placed the idea in the story department of Disney Feature Animation more than four years before the film’s release. That report said the project was initially called King of the Jungle, a former title also recorded by D23’s history of the film.

“More than four years” is the newspaper’s description, not a precise start date. The record supports internal story development; it does not show that every element was created without artistic influence.

What inspired the film’s setting and animals?

The 1994 production’s research into Africa and wildlife was part of how the filmmakers shaped the movie’s visual world. D23 records that an artistic team traveled to Africa to explore how to depict the setting, while animators studied live lions and other animals brought to the studio. That is evidence of visual and animal research, not evidence of a specific literary source for the story.

The film opened in limited release on June 15, 1994, and in general release on June 24, according to D23. Those dates place the Kimba discussion in the context of the original film’s release, rather than later adaptations or productions.

Why was The Lion King compared with Kimba?

In the July 1994 Los Angeles Times report, producer Fred Ladd, who had worked on the Kimba television series, and manga scholar Frederik Schodt pointed to similarities they saw in characters and a scene. Schodt compared an episode in which the shape of a dead lion father appears in clouds with the scene in which Simba sees Mufasa in the clouds. The report also described comparisons involving a baboon adviser, a bird, hyenas and a villainous lion.

Those are reported observations, not proof that the stories have the same source. The article also described substantial differences in their plots and character arcs:

Comparison Kimba, the White Lion The Lion King
How the cub is separated from his family The report says Kimba’s mother dies aboard a ship. Simba leaves after believing he played a role in his father’s death.
Human characters and world The report says Kimba encounters human civilization. The film has no human beings.
Central conflict The report notes a different story, rather than a matching version of Simba’s confrontation. Simba confronts Scar and the hyenas.

The table summarizes the contrasts in the 1994 report; it is not a complete comparison of either work.

What did the filmmakers and Tezuka Productions say?

The Los Angeles Times reported that co-director Rob Minkoff said he was unfamiliar with the series and that it had not been discussed during his time on the project. The paper quoted him: “I know for a fact that (‘Kimba’) has never been discussed as long as I’ve been on the project.” That statement addresses what Minkoff said he knew and what he recalled from his own time on the film; it does not establish what every artist may have seen.

The same report said Takayuki Matsutani, president of Tezuka Productions, acknowledged similarities but said the company considered the works different and Disney’s film original. As reported by Robert W. Welkos, Matsutani said: “Therefore, our company’s general opinion is ‘The Lion King’ is a totally different piece from ‘The Jungle Emperor’ and is an original work completed by the Disney production’s long-lasting excellent production technique.”

Does the evidence prove The Lion King copied Kimba?

No. The contemporaneous report establishes that observers identified similarities and that the parties made statements about them. It also records differences between the stories and Matsutani’s view that they were distinct. The available sources do not establish that The Lion King was copied from Kimba, nor do they settle whether any individual artist involved had encountered the earlier work. Calling the film a proven copy goes beyond what these accounts show; claiming there are no similarities would also misrepresent the reporting.

Keep the 2019 production separate

Disney News’s July 29, 2019 article describes research for the 2019 film, including trips to Kenya and Disney’s Animal Kingdom and comments from producer Jeffrey Silver and production designer James Chinlund. Those details concern that later production and cannot establish what inspired the 1994 film. For the original movie’s Africa research and live-animal study, D23 is the relevant source.
