Beyoncé got her first name from her mother, Tina Knowles’s maiden name. Knowles has said she chose it because there were few boys in the family and she worried the name might disappear. The choice also carried a personal history: she once found her own name difficult and embarrassing, but grew to love it.
Why Tina Knowles gave her daughter the name Beyoncé
“Well, Beyonce is my last name, my maiden name,” Tina Knowles said in a Vogue interview. When she was expecting a child, she thought about how few boys there were in the family and feared the name would become extinct. Passing it to her daughter was a way to keep her maternal family name alive.
Knowles has described an emotional change in her relationship with the name. As a child, she remembered wishing for a more ordinary name because people struggled to pronounce it. As an adult, she came to embrace it. Naming her daughter Beyoncé joined that hard-won affection with her wish to carry the family name forward.
What does Beyincé have to do with Beyoncé?
The related spelling Beyincé appears in Knowles’s account of variations in family records. The Los Angeles Times reported her recollection that she and her brother had the spelling Beyoncé, while some other relatives were recorded as Beyincé. Knowles said her mother explained that the alternate spelling was entered on birth certificates, and recalled her mother being told, “Be happy that you’re getting a birth certificate.”

Knowles connected that episode to segregation and racial discrimination. This is her family’s recollection, as reported by the newspaper; the account does not establish that the birth certificates were independently examined. The spellings Beyoncé and Beyincé are related in her story, but that does not mean the singer was named after “Beyincé”: Knowles identified Beyoncé as her own maiden name.
How the family spelling changed
In a separate Vogue interview, Knowles said the family name had earlier been written Boyance. She described her mother changing the spelling after the family arrived in Texas so it would rhyme with “fiancé.” This, too, is Knowles’s oral account rather than independently verified name-history research. Boyance, Beyoncé and Beyincé should not be treated as a proven, documented sequence of spellings.

When Beyoncé was born
Beyoncé was born in Houston, Texas, on September 4, 1981, to Tina and Mathew Knowles, according to the National Women’s History Museum. Her name’s origin, however, is best understood through her mother’s own explanation: a maiden name she once felt awkward carrying became a name she wanted to preserve for another generation.
