Spoilers for “Woe’s Hollow,” Season 2, Episode 4. Lumon sends the Macrodata Refinement team into a snowy wilderness for an Outdoor Retreat and Team-Building Occurrence (ORTBO), presenting the trip as a group exercise. But the unfamiliar setting gives Irving room to question whether the person acting as Helly is really Helly—and his suspicion leads to the episode’s major reveal.
What happens in “Woe’s Hollow”?
The MDR team wakes in a snowy outdoor location rather than its familiar Lumon office. Milchick shepherds the innies through an ORTBO, a corporate exercise built around a quest involving Dieter Eagan. The in-story book identifies Dieter as Kier Eagan’s twin, turning Lumon history into part of the team-building activity.

The excursion is not a voluntary escape from Lumon: it is another company-directed experience, with the team still subject to Milchick’s authority. Apple’s official synopsis gives away little, describing the episode only as “The team participates in a group activity.”
Why does the team leave Lumon?
On screen, Lumon frames the trip as team-building. The episode does not establish a complete explanation of the company’s motives. Adam Scott, who plays Mark, offered an interpretation in a TIME interview: “It’s somewhat a reaction to the overtime contingency and us all breaking out in Season 1.” He added, “It’s trying to teach them a lesson.” That is Scott’s reading of Lumon’s intent, not a confirmed statement of the company’s plan within the story.

The remote setting also changes the tone of the episode. Director Ben Stiller told TV Guide he wanted episodes to feel “pretty stark and hopefully a little bit strange, not a lot of dialogue until it was necessary, and sort of a feeling of unease.” In “Woe’s Hollow,” the snow and isolation make the staged exercise feel less like a normal office activity and more like a situation the innies cannot fully understand or control.
Why does Irving suspect Helly is Helena?
Irving is already unsettled by the “night gardener” detail connected to the innies’ experience outside Lumon after the Season 1 finale. During the retreat, Helly’s behavior adds to his doubts. The episode lets those observations build before making the deception explicit: Irving suspects that Helena Eagan has been posing as Helly since the innies returned, but suspicion is not proof.

Mark does not know about the switch. He shares an intimate moment with the person he believes is Helly, unaware that she is Helena. That difference in what the characters know matters: Irving’s alarm is grounded in clues, while Mark is acting on the identity he thinks he is seeing.
Is Helly really Helena in Episode 4?
No. The reveal is that Helena has been masquerading as Helly. Irving tries to prove his theory by drowning her. Milchick intervenes, and Helly R. is returned to the shared body. TIME’s account describes the confrontation as the point at which Irving’s suspicion becomes undeniable to the audience.

The episode distinguishes the two identities through what the characters know and how Lumon handles the switch. Irving recognizes a threat and acts on his theory; Mark remains unaware until the reveal; Milchick has the power to bring Helly back. The scene turns the retreat from an odd corporate outing into a test of whether the innies can trust the person presenting herself as one of them.

TheWrap reports that the exterior scenes were filmed at Minnewaska State Park in upstate New York. Britt Lower estimated that filming there took “about four or five weeks.” That is Lower’s estimate of the shoot, not an official production schedule.
