But the eight-episode 2024 adaptation does not consistently turn that premise into the imaginative adventure it promises. Critical reviews point to repetitive plotting, lumpy pacing and thinly developed characters; its mythology and look may still make it a reasonable pick for younger viewers or families seeking a light fantasy follow-up.
What is The Spiderwick Chronicles about?
The live-action series follows Helen Grace and her children—twins Jared and Simon, and their sister Mallory—after they move to their ancestral home. Jared encounters a boggart and discovers that magical creatures are real. His great-aunt Lucinda urges him to find pages from her father’s field guide and protect them from Mulgarath. The official distributor lists the first season as eight episodes, released in 2024, and identifies the show as a kids-and-family title. Paramount Global Content’s series listing names Joy Bryant, Lyon Daniels, Noah Cottrell, Mychala Lee, Jack Dylan Grazer and Christian Slater among the principal cast.
The series is based on Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi’s books. That connection gives the show a vivid mythology to draw on, but the available reviews do not establish specific changes between the books and screen adaptation. It is safer to judge this season on how well its premise works as television than to claim it is faithful or unfaithful in particular details.
Is Season 1 worth watching?
It depends on what you want from a fantasy series. If the appeal is a family adventure built around magical creatures and a mysterious old home, the premise may be enough to make the season worth trying. If you want consistently inventive plotting, brisk pacing or especially deep character work, the critical response suggests tempering expectations.

On the Rotten Tomatoes season page accessed October 8, 2026, the Tomatometer was 46% from 13 reviews, while the Popcornmeter was 73% from more than 100 ratings. These are the aggregator’s changing scores, not definitive measures of quality. Its critics consensus calls the series “a lackluster adaptation that’s in need of greater imagination and purpose.” Rotten Tomatoes’ season page also shows a gap between the critics’ and audience aggregates, suggesting a more favorable response among the audience ratings counted there.
What works—and what gets in the way?
The appeal of the world
The books’ creature-filled mythology gives the adaptation a strong starting point, and some reviewers found its aesthetic compelling. Carla Monfort of Espinof described the show as lighthearted entertainment with an appealing look, while Caroline Siede of The Daily Beast considered it a “worthy enough follow-up” for families looking for another fantasy series after Percy Jackson. Those are individual critical views, rather than a guarantee that the series will land for every viewer.

The limits of the storytelling
The most consistent reservations concern execution rather than the basic premise. Variety’s Aramide Tinubu wrote that the adventure “lacks the whimsy needed to elevate the narrative for a new generation of young adults.” Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter criticized “repetitive plotting, lumpy pacing, underdeveloped characters making inexplicable decisions.” Monfort likewise felt the script could have received more effort, and Siede cautioned against expecting too much “bona fide magic.” Taken together, these reviews describe a show whose fantasy setup can be more engaging than the storytelling built around it.
Who is the show best suited to?
- Younger fantasy viewers: The magical creatures and family-adventure premise may be the main attraction.
- Families choosing a shared series: Siede’s review suggests it can work as an approachable next fantasy watch, though it may not satisfy viewers seeking a more polished or surprising story.
- Fans of the books: The adaptation offers a screen version of the world created by Black and DiTerlizzi, but the available evidence does not support a detailed verdict on its fidelity to the novels.
Roku said the series had a strong launch on its platform, describing it as The Roku Channel’s most-watched on-demand debut by unique viewers and hours streamed on both its first day and first three days. Roku did not provide an underlying audience count in that post, so this is a company-reported comparative claim, not an independently audited measure. Roku’s launch-performance post also reproduces a line from the finale, delivered by Aunt Lucinda: “Having someone believe in you is the most powerful form of magic there is.”
