The Simpsons has produced decades of jokes about politics, technology and public life. Some later look strikingly familiar, but resemblance is not proof of foresight. This curated selection weighs each example by how specific the scene was, how long before the real event it aired, and how closely the two match. It is not an objective ranking: a long-running show offers many chances for hindsight to turn a loose parallel into a “prediction.”

Which Simpsons predictions have the strongest matches?

The clearest cases are a named Nobel laureate and a 1998 corporate joke that later echoed a real acquisition. Other examples are better understood as satire or broad imaginings of technology, rather than forecasts of a particular event or product.

1. Bengt Holmström and the economics Nobel

In the 2010 season premiere, “Elementary School Musical,” Milhouse’s Nobel Prize betting-pool scorecard included economist Bengt Holmström as a possible winner. In 2016, Holmström shared the economics prize with Oliver Hart. TIME reported the six-year interval between the episode and the award. Naming a particular eventual laureate makes this a relatively specific match, though the available reporting does not explain why the writers selected him. TIME’s account of the Nobel gag.

2. 20th Century Fox as a Disney division

In the 1998 episode “When You Dish Upon a Star,” a studio sign identifies 20th Century Fox as “A Division of Walt Disney Co.” Disney later acquired Fox assets, making the fictional sign look prescient. The joke matches the broad corporate relationship, not the deal’s terms, timing or regulatory path. TIME reported a $66.1 billion announced deal in 2017; The Independent later reported a $71.3 billion transaction figure. Those figures reflect different reporting contexts and should not be treated as interchangeable. TIME on the Fox sign and announced deal; The Independent’s account.

3. Donald Trump as a future president

“Bart to the Future,” which first aired in March 2000, shows Lisa becoming president after a fictionalized Donald Trump. Lisa describes inheriting a budget crunch from his administration. Writer Dan Greaney later said the gag was intended as a warning about the country’s direction, not as a supernatural forecast: “That just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom.” The episode is a notable political coincidence, but it did not predict Trump’s 2015 candidacy announcement or the precise result of the 2016 election. TIME on the episode and Greaney’s explanation.

4. Wristwatch communication

In the future-set “Lisa’s Wedding,” characters communicate using wrist-worn devices. That resembles the broad idea of communication from a watch, but TIME distinguishes the fictional device from later voice-recognition smartwatches. The scene did not forecast a specific model, feature set or product launch. TIME’s overview of the watch scene.

What other examples are often called predictions?

These examples have looser or more interpretive matches. They help explain why the show’s reputation for prediction needs qualification: a joke can resemble a later development without identifying its details or proving it was forecast.

5. Autocorrect mishaps

A Simpsons joke about a device changing a message into the wrong words is often compared with autocorrect errors on modern phones. The resemblance is the comic problem of automated text correction, not a prediction of a particular keyboard, algorithm or device. TIME includes the gag among the show’s apparent predictions. 6. Video calling

Future-set scenes in the series show people communicating by video. Video calls later became familiar, but the basic concept long predates any one episode, and the scenes do not specify today’s services or hardware. It is more accurate to call this an imagined future technology that became commonplace than a precise prediction. TIME’s overview.

7. Homer’s equation and the Higgs boson

A chalkboard equation written by Homer has been linked retrospectively to the mass of the Higgs boson. The connection is an intriguing mathematical parallel, but it should not be inflated into a claim that the episode predicted the particle’s discovery. TIME includes the equation among the show’s apparent predictions. TIME’s overview of the equation.

8. The NSA and surveillance

A storyline involving government surveillance is often compared with later public debate about the National Security Agency. The broad subject of state surveillance is not the same as predicting a particular program, disclosure or policy. TIME lists the storyline as an apparent prediction, but the resemblance is thematic rather than a precise forecast. TIME’s overview.

9. FIFA corruption

The series’ treatment of corruption in international soccer has been read as anticipating later FIFA scandals. It is a satire of corruption in sports governance, not evidence that the show foresaw particular investigations, officials or charges. TIME includes FIFA corruption among its examples. TIME’s overview.

10. Greece’s debt crisis

A joke about Greece’s financial troubles is often paired with the country’s later debt crisis. That makes for a recognizable parallel, but a reference to debt problems is not a detailed prediction of the crisis’s timing, causes or consequences. TIME lists the gag as an apparent prediction. TIME’s overview.

Did The Simpsons predict the coronavirus?

No. Viral posts claiming the show predicted COVID-19 relied on altered or miscaptioned material. In the relevant image, the text was “apocalypse meow,” not “corona virus”; other circulated scenes referred to fictional “Osaka flu.” Those are not accurate depictions of the show predicting coronavirus. PolitiFact’s fact-check.

Did the show predict Trump’s candidacy or the 2016 election map?

No. A viral Trump Tower escalator clip came from a 2015 short, after Trump had announced his candidacy. The circulated electoral-map image came from a 2012 Romney–Obama joke involving Mr. Burns and his dog, not from “Bart to the Future.” Neither image shows a 2000 prediction of Trump’s candidacy or the 2016 state-by-state map. Lead Stories’ image-provenance fact-check.

Why do the predictions seem so convincing?

Specific names and details are more memorable than the many jokes that do not resemble later events. Meanwhile, satire often extrapolates from trends already visible when an episode is written. A resemblance becomes less convincing when it depends on a cropped image, a later clip presented as an earlier scene, or a broad theme described as an exact forecast. The strongest way to assess a claim is to check the original episode and air date, then compare the actual scene with the later event rather than a meme about it.
