In Entertainment Tonight’s June 29, 2023 report, Lola Tung had not publicly disclosed whether she was dating, Gavin Casalegno had not shared a new relationship update after a reported breakup, and Christopher Briney was reported to be dating Isabel Machado. Those are public-reporting snapshots about three leads—not confirmation of anyone’s private status or a roundup of the entire cast.
What was reported about the three lead actors in 2023?
Entertainment Tonight’s June 29, 2023 article covered Lola Tung, Gavin Casalegno, and Christopher Briney. Its account distinguishes between what the actors had publicly disclosed and what remained unknown; it does not establish whether someone with no public update was privately in a relationship.
Lola Tung
ET said Tung had “stayed mum about who, if anyone, she’s dating in real-life.” In other words, she had not publicly disclosed a dating relationship in the article. That is not proof that she was single.
Tung also spoke to ET about Belly’s fictional romantic choice, saying, “I’ve always been Team Belly and I believe that she should go with whoever she loves the most, whatever her heart [says],” and, “Follow her heart, see where it ends up. They’re both very wonderful boys and she has a hard decision to make.” Those comments concern her character, not Tung’s own dating life.

Gavin Casalegno
ET reported that Casalegno had previously dated model Larsen Thompson for six years and cited reports that they broke up the previous August. The article said he had kept subsequent relationship updates private and had not posted a picture with a new romantic partner as of June 29, 2023. It did not establish that he was single.
Christopher Briney
ET reported that Briney had been dating Isabel Machado since June 2021. The article described Machado as a New York-based singer and actor. This is the named relationship reported in the June 2023 roundup.

How does that differ from the show’s love triangle?
The series’ fictional relationships are separate from the cast’s real lives. About Amazon describes Belly as facing a complicated situation with brothers Conrad and Jeremiah; the Los Angeles Times identifies Tung, Briney, and Casalegno as the actors playing Belly and the Fisher brothers. The characters’ romantic story does not establish anything about the actors’ relationships.
The show is based on Jenny Han’s book series. In a Los Angeles Times interview about the fictional story, Han said, “To me the biggest challenge of writing contemporary romantic stories is creating stakes that feel big enough for young people, that still feel realistic but should have a certain weight to it.”

What this 2023 roundup can—and cannot—tell you
- Tung: no relationship publicly disclosed in ET’s June 29, 2023 article.
- Casalegno: a prior relationship with Thompson and a reported split; no new relationship update shared publicly in the article.
- Briney: reported by ET to be dating Machado since June 2021.
These categories describe the available public reporting at that time, not equivalent evidence about private relationship status. The report concerns three lead actors, not every member of the cast, and it does not establish anyone’s present-day status.
