Steve Austin won two of his three WrestleMania matches against The Rock. Their meetings at WrestleManias XV, X-Seven and XIX moved from a championship comeback to a shocking alliance with Mr. McMahon, then a final non-title match that The Rock won. The WrestleMania series ended 2–1 in Austin’s favor.
How the three matches fit together
This trilogy means the pair’s three WrestleMania meetings—not every match they had against one another. The stakes and story changed each time: Austin pursued The Rock’s championship in 1999, took it again in 2001 with McMahon’s help, and met The Rock once more in 2003 without a title on the line.

WrestleMania XV: Austin takes back the championship
On March 28, 1999, in Philadelphia, WWE Champion The Rock represented Mr. McMahon’s Corporation against Austin, who was trying to reclaim the title. The match was the event’s main event, and WWE describes it as No Disqualification—not a conventional rules contest. WWE’s WrestleMania XV results record Austin defeating The Rock to become champion. WrestleMania X-Seven: Austin wins, but the alliance changes everything
Two years later, on April 1, 2001, Austin and The Rock met again for the WWE Championship at the Reliant Astrodome in Houston. Austin won for the second time, but the finish transformed the meaning of the victory: he joined forces with McMahon, the authority figure whose opposition had helped define Austin’s rebellion. WWE describes the turn as one of the most shocking moments in its history.

WrestleMania XIX: The Rock gets his WrestleMania victory
Their third WrestleMania match took place in Seattle on March 30, 2003, with no championship at stake. The Rock defeated Austin, earning his first WrestleMania win against him and closing the series with Austin ahead 2–1. WWE’s retrospective says The Rock needed three Rock Bottoms.

WWE’s event-facts page also states: “Stone Cold spent the night prior to the match in the hospital.” That is WWE’s wording; it does not establish a diagnosis or show that the hospital stay affected the result.
Why the trilogy’s shape matters
The results alone make this an Austin-led series: he won twice, and The Rock once. But the three matches do not tell the same kind of story. The first was a title chase against the corporate champion; the second paired another championship win with Austin’s unexpected acceptance of McMahon’s help; the third was a non-title final encounter that gave The Rock his first WrestleMania victory over Austin. That shift—from comeback, to betrayal, to closing chapter—is what distinguishes the trilogy from a simple repeat rivalry.
