The 2024 film The Order is based on the real white supremacist group known as the Order, or the Silent Brotherhood, and the FBI manhunt for its leader, Robert Jay Mathews. The group used robbery, counterfeiting and other violent crimes to fund a plan to overthrow the U.S. government and establish an Aryan homeland in the Pacific Northwest. The movie is a dramatized thriller, not a scene-by-scene historical record.
What was the real Order?
The Order, whose members called it the Silent Brotherhood, formed in the early 1980s among white supremacist networks. The Anti-Defamation League describes links to associates of Aryan Nations, the neo-Nazi National Alliance and splinter groups of the Ku Klux Klan. Its stated political aim was to overthrow the federal government and establish an Aryan homeland in the Pacific Northwest. The ADL’s account of the group places its activity in the context of those wider extremist networks.
Robert Jay Mathews led the group. Rather than limiting itself to propaganda or organizing, the Order pursued a violent criminal campaign to raise money and advance its political project.
What crimes did the Order commit?
The ADL describes a 1983–1984 campaign that included bank robberies, counterfeiting, bombings, armored-car holdups and murder. Counterfeiting operations were based at the Aryan Nations compound. These crimes were not incidental to the group’s politics: they were part of its effort to finance its cause.

Why is Alan Berg part of the story?
In 1984, two members of Mathews’s group murdered Alan Berg, a Jewish Denver talk-radio host who criticized the radical right. The killing brought the Order broad national attention. WIRED’s account of Berg’s murder and a PBS documentary transcript describe the group’s hostility toward him and its role in the assassination.
How was Mathews found, and what happened at Whidbey Island?
A firearm dropped during an armored-truck robbery helped investigators connect the crime to Mathews and locate him and other members, according to the PBS documentary transcript. The trail ended on Whidbey Island, Washington, where federal agents confronted Mathews.

The standoff began on December 7 and lasted more than 30 hours, the Associated Press reported in 2024. Mathews refused to surrender; the house caught fire during the confrontation, and his body was found there at daybreak on December 8, 1984. The AP’s account of the film and historical case dates his death to that final confrontation.
How closely does the film follow the real events?
AP describes The Order as a dramatized thriller about the real manhunt. Jude Law plays an FBI agent and Nicholas Hoult plays Mathews. The screenplay is based on Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s 1989 nonfiction book The Silent Brotherhood, a source also identified by WIRED.

The book’s reported scope includes Mathews’s radicalization, the crime spree, his death and the trials of followers. The available accounts establish the film’s historical basis, but do not verify every scene or character detail as exact. Screenwriter Zach Baylin described the creative approach this way: “We were looking to encase the story of one of these groups inside a classic crime thriller,” according to AP. That is a statement of intent, not evidence that the film is a documentary.

For a fuller account than a dramatized film can provide, Flynn and Gerhardt’s The Silent Brotherhood is the nonfiction book on which the screenplay is based. The film and book offer different kinds of access: the movie uses thriller storytelling, while the book’s reported scope covers the group’s development, crimes, Mathews’s death and the trials that followed.
