Maria Kutschera came to the household in 1926 to tutor one child, married Georg von Trapp in 1927, and later helped the family turn its musical abilities into a public career. In 1938, they left Austria by train—not by secretly crossing the Alps into Switzerland—and eventually emigrated to the United States.
How Maria joined the family—and whom she was hired to teach
In 1926, Maria Kutschera came to the von Trapp home to tutor one of Georg’s daughters, also named Maria, who was recovering from scarlet fever. The familiar screen version instead introduces her as a governess for all seven children. The National Archives’ account, by archivist Joan Gearin, draws this distinction using Maria’s memoir, contemporary newspaper reports, and original records: Movie vs. Reality: The Real Story of the Von Trapp Family.
How many von Trapp children were there?
Georg had seven children with his first wife, Agathe. He and Maria had three more, making ten children in the family. The stage and screen story centers on the original seven and alters the family timeline; Maria and Georg had married years before the departure from Austria.
When did Maria and Georg marry, and what was their relationship like?
Maria and Georg married in 1927, eleven years before the family left Austria. That chronology differs from the film’s romance, which unfolds in the run-up to the family’s escape.

Maria’s memoir also complicates the romantic arc. As quoted in Gearin’s National Archives article, she wrote: “I really and truly was not in love. I liked him but didn’t love him. However, I loved the children, so in a way I really married the children. . . . [B]y and by I learned to love him more than I have ever loved before or after.” This is Maria’s retrospective account, not a contemporary diary entry.
Was Georg really a stern father who disliked music?
The film’s distant, music-disapproving Captain is not a reliable portrait of Georg. The National Archives describes him as a warmhearted father who enjoyed making music with his family. Their musical ability was already present before Maria arrived; she taught them madrigals rather than introducing them to music from scratch.

How the family became the Trapp Family Singers
Financial difficulties in the 1930s helped push the family toward music as a livelihood. Salzburg Tourism’s account credits chaplain Franz Wasner and soprano Lotte Lehmann with helping guide their musical development. The group went on to perform and tour as the Trapp Family Singers. The film also changes the Salzburg Festival competition chronology. The National Archives says the family won first prize in the festival competition in 1937, not 1936 as shown in the film, and did not sing at Salzburg again. That specific correction is based on the Archives’ account and should not be blurred into a general claim that every screen performance mirrors the family’s real career.

Did the von Trapps escape over the Alps?
No. The family did not make the film’s clandestine mountain crossing to Switzerland. They left after Austria’s 1938 annexation and amid mounting Nazi pressure, traveling by train. Daughter Maria later recalled the family’s cover story and actual route in words quoted by Gearin: “We did tell people that we were going to America to sing. And we did not climb over mountains with all our heavy suitcases and instruments. We left by train, pretending nothing.” The family ultimately settled in Vermont, according to Salzburg Tourism.

The family’s story reached mass audiences through a sequence of adaptations, each of which reshaped it. Maria’s memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, was published in 1949. The National Archives says the Broadway musical drew generally on its first section while making many alterations and omissions.

- For the family’s own perspective: Maria von Trapp’s 1949 memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Treat it as a memoir: valuable first-hand testimony, shaped by the author’s perspective.
- For a fact-check against records: Joan Gearin’s National Archives article. It explains that the author consulted Maria’s books, contemporary newspapers, and original immigration and naturalization records held by the Archives. The article was published in 2005 and last reviewed by NARA on July 22, 2024.
