Catherine, Princess of Wales, reportedly said her hair had “gone light in the sunshine.” That explanation was relayed by actress Su Pollard, rather than confirmed in a public statement by Catherine. A stylist quoted in coverage suggested highlights or lightening could also contribute, but the exact color treatment remains unconfirmed.
What Catherine reportedly said about her lighter hair
In a November 22, 2025, report, Marie Claire recounted an exchange that Su Pollard said took place backstage at the Royal Variety Performance on November 19. Pollard said Catherine told her: “It used to be brown, but it’s gone light in the sunshine.” This is a secondhand account of Catherine’s remark, not independent proof that sunshine alone caused the change.
How her hair appeared to change
Coverage of Catherine’s public appearances described a lighter look in 2025. ABC News dated her Crathie Kirk appearance to August 24, 2025; British Vogue described her hair at a September 4 Natural History Museum engagement as moving from chestnut or chocolate brown toward ash blonde. These are descriptions of how her hair looked in photographs and at events, not an official record of its color or treatment.
An August 2026 Marie Claire account described a subtler bronde look with highlights at Balmoral, compared with the lighter 2025 appearance. That, too, is a media observation rather than confirmation of a salon history.

Could highlights or styling explain the difference?
A color expert quoted by Marie Claire suggested that sunshine may not be the only factor and that a darker base with added highlights could produce the lighter effect. The suggestion is an expert interpretation; Catherine has not confirmed that this is the technique used on her hair.
A stylist quoted in the same coverage also cautioned that lighting and styling can affect how hair color reads in photographs. Loose waves and a sleeker, pulled-back style, for example, may make the same hair appear different. Comparing images alone cannot establish a precise color change or how it was achieved.
