Germain Lussier’s May 1, 2024 Gizmodo/io9 roundup selected science fiction, fantasy and horror titles from much larger monthly service schedules. Its “best” picks are editorial selections, not a ranked comparison or a measured quality score. Streaming catalogs change, and the schedules below do not establish where a title is available today.
How to use this May 2024 guide
The roundup was organized by service, so you can scan Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, Max, Paramount+, Shudder and Peacock. It mixed new premieres and originals with films already released elsewhere that were being added to a service’s library. Dates refer to the schedules for May 2024; they are not evidence of current availability.

Availability was not necessarily global. Disney+ described its May schedule as U.S.-specific and said regional libraries could vary and titles were subject to change. Check the service in your own region for present-day availability, and do not assume that every listed title was included with a subscription without an additional fee.
Netflix
The May guide listed Starship Troopers among Netflix’s May 1 arrivals and Unfrosted for May 3. These illustrate the roundup’s mix of catalog additions and new releases. Netflix’s official 2024 film page also listed Unfrosted for May 3 and described it as Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut. The schedule date is historical; it does not confirm either film remains on Netflix.

Prime Video
Prime Video’s May 1 additions in the roundup included Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and Rear Window. Later in the month, it listed Muppets From Space for May 14 and Pearl for May 16. These were library additions in the monthly schedule, not a claim that the films were newly released in May 2024.
Hulu
Hulu’s schedule distinguished its new original from catalog titles. Its official press schedule marked Prom Dates as a Hulu Original arriving May 3 and listed Ferrari for May 24. The io9 roundup separately included The Mask and Fantastic Mr. Fox among Hulu’s May 1 additions. Those dates describe the published May schedule, not today’s catalog.

Disney+
Disney+’s U.S. May schedule, published April 16, 2024, listed all six episodes of Star Wars: Tales of the Empire for May 4 and the Beatles film Let It Be for May 8. Disney noted that regional availability could differ and that the schedule was subject to change, so these entries should be read as U.S. schedule information for that month.
Max
The roundup listed The Iron Claw for May 10 and the documentary MoviePass, MovieCrash for May 29. The Associated Press’s May 17 streaming report also said Dune: Part Two was arriving on Max that month. Separately, Rotten Tomatoes’ May service guide listed Hacks Season 3 as premiering on Max May 2. These are distinct schedule entries, not a comparative ranking of Max’s releases.

Paramount+, Shudder and Peacock
The May roundup also included genre and franchise picks from these services: Annihilation on Paramount+, The Toxic Avenger on Shudder and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish on Peacock. The cited roundup examples do not supply dates for these three entries, so they are listed here as titles included in its May selections rather than assigned a specific arrival day.

The list was designed to filter a much larger set of monthly releases for viewers interested in science fiction, fantasy and horror. It therefore included older library films such as Starship Troopers, Psycho and Rear Window alongside newer releases and premieres such as Unfrosted and Prom Dates. “Best” describes the editors’ genre-oriented choices; the schedules do not provide a common scoring method for judging every service’s slate.
