Spoilers for My Hero Academia Season 7, episode 11. The moment is Katsuki Bakugo’s apparent fatal injury during his fight with Tomura Shigaraki. It lands just as Bakugo seems to be finding his footing, turning a hard-fought comeback into a cliffhanger about both his survival and what his growth has meant.
What happens to Bakugo in the scene?
In “Light Fades to Rain,” Shigaraki overwhelms Bakugo and strikes him in the chest. The attack reads as potentially fatal, bringing the fight to an abrupt emotional breaking point rather than offering a clean victory or a moment of relief.

The episode follows Bakugo’s Howitzer Impact Cluster, which fails to stop Shigaraki. With Bakugo in danger, U.A.’s Big Three step in to help. That sequence is the immediate context for the blow: Bakugo has committed himself to the fight, but his strongest attack has not been enough to turn it.
Which Season 7 episode is it?
The scene occurs in Season 7, episode 11, “Light Fades to Rain,” overall episode 149. Crunchyroll lists the installment as E149 and displays an August 10, 2024 release date; the official Japanese episode listing gives July 20, 2024 as its broadcast date. Those dates reflect different platform or territory schedules, not different episodes.

- Middle school student Izuku Midoriya wants to be a hero more than anything, but he hasn't got an ounce of power in him

Why does the cliffhanger hit so hard?
Bakugo seems to be making progress
The scene’s force comes partly from its timing. Bakugo appears to be finding a rhythm against Shigaraki, so the sudden injury cuts off a sense of momentum just as it begins to build. The contrast makes the blow feel more devastating than a defeat that had seemed inevitable from the start.
It puts his growth under pressure
Bakugo’s development has involved more than getting stronger. As he confronts the consequences of his earlier behavior and his relationship with others, the fight makes his growth visible through what he is willing to do and whom he is trying to protect. The injury interrupts that progress at the moment when it seems to matter most.

- MHA Fandom: Midoriya inherits the superpower of the world’s greatest hero, but greatness won’t come easy.
- Includes: The first 20 volumes of the bestselling My Hero Academia manga.
- Format: Softcover, 3840 pages.
That creates a second question beneath the survival cliffhanger: if Bakugo’s arc is about change, what does that change mean if he does not get the chance to keep living it? The story briefly leaves both questions suspended, rather than resolving them within the episode.
Effort does not guarantee a reward
Action stories often train viewers to expect that determination and hard work will eventually produce a breakthrough. This scene resists that reassurance. Bakugo can fight with everything he has and still be outmatched, making the moment feel frighteningly unfair. That tension is a critical reading of the scene, not evidence that every viewer reacted to it in the same way.

What the episode leaves unresolved
When “Light Fades to Rain” first aired, its closing events invited viewers to wonder whether Bakugo would survive. The CBR article that framed the scene as a heartbreaking moment was published on August 12, 2024, when that uncertainty was part of the cliffhanger’s appeal. That was a time-specific reaction to the episode, not a statement of the story’s present-day resolution.
The available episode summaries establish the failed attack, Bakugo’s danger, and the Big Three’s intervention. They do not, by themselves, establish what happens to Bakugo afterward. Readers following the series beyond this episode should distinguish that initial uncertainty from later developments.

Episode 11 carries forward the confrontation from the previous installment. The official Japanese announcement identifies Bakugo’s Howitzer Impact Cluster as the attack that failed to stop Shigaraki, while Crunchyroll’s synopsis likewise says the Howitzer Impact did not work and notes the Big Three’s arrival. The episode’s emotional turn therefore grows out of a tactical setback: Bakugo has made a major attempt, but the threat remains.
For the anime’s cliffhanger, the essential reference is episode 149, “Light Fades to Rain.” The available sources do not establish a precise manga chapter-to-volume mapping for this scene, so a numbered volume should not be inferred from the episode listing.
