The Oldest Known Recording of the Human Voice Was Recreated From a Scan

The 1860 “Au clair de la lune” phonautogram was a visual sound trace, not a playable record. Researchers scanned and reconstructed it as audio in 2008.

The familiar “oldest record in history” is a paper trace of sound, not a playable record. Made in 1860 by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville’s phonautograph, it preserves a short sung passage from “Au clair de la lune.” Researchers scanned the trace and digitally reconstructed it as audible sound in 2008.

What is the oldest sound recording?

The best-known candidate for the oldest known recording of the human voice is a phonautogram dated April 9, 1860. It captures roughly ten seconds of the French song “Au clair de la lune,” including the words “Pierrot répondit,” according to First Sounds’ 2008 announcement.

Calling it the oldest “record” can mislead: the surviving object is a visible trace on a soot-blackened surface, not a disc or cylinder meant to be played. Its claim to “oldest” is most precise when limited to a known machine-made recording of the human voice; it should not be taken as an unqualified claim about every sound ever recorded or preserved. The Library of Congress describes Scott’s traces as among the earliest recoverable recordings. Library of Congress, “Early Recordings”.

How Scott’s phonautograph recorded sound

Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville devised the phonautograph in France in 1857. Sound waves vibrated a membrane, and a stylus attached to it marked the movement onto a soot-blackened surface. The device made sound visible and permanent on paper, but it did not play the trace back. Scott’s aim was to study sound, not to create a machine for listening to the marks later. The National Park Service’s history of sound recording distinguishes this visual recording from later playback technology.

How a scan became audible

In 2008, researchers used high-resolution scans and non-contact digital imaging to map the recorded trace, then processed that digital representation into sound. The work did not involve playing the fragile original on a record player: the phonautogram contained no conventional playback groove or audio track. Because Scott’s apparatus was hand-cranked, the team also had to account for speed variation when reconstructing playback. First Sounds describes the scanning and restoration process in its announcement of the recovered recording.

The result is a digital reconstruction of the marks’ recorded movement, rather than a modern recording of the original performance. It gives listeners access to sound inferred from the trace; it does not turn the 1860 artifact into a playable disc.

Scott’s recording and Edison’s phonograph are different milestones

Scott’s achievement came first as a way to record sound visually. Thomas Edison’s 1877 phonograph marked a different advance: it could both record and reproduce sound. The National Park Service describes sound recording as having been invented twice, reflecting the distinction between capturing a trace and making sound playable. Charles Cros proposed a playback process before Edison, but the NPS says he did not build a machine to demonstrate it. National Park Service.

How the recording survived

Scott’s phonautograms were not recognized in their own era as playable recordings. Several dozen recordings he made in Paris between 1853 and 1860 were located and digitally preserved between 2007 and 2009, according to David Giovannoni’s 2021 Library of Congress essay. Giovannoni reports that the collections’ provenance was indisputable and their chain of custody uninterrupted. He also describes them as having lain silent and forgotten in French institutions for 150 years—a rounded historical characterization.

Scott himself hoped that sound might preserve the “features of the diction” of performers who died without leaving a trace of their art, as quoted in Giovannoni’s essay. The phonautograph did not deliver the playback Scott imagined, but the surviving traces ultimately made that aspiration newly relevant.
