Chicago P.D. left Hailey Upton’s next move unspecified on purpose: showrunner Gwen Sigan wanted the Season 11 finale to end with possibility, not a named destination. Tracy Spiridakos’s reason for leaving the series was separate—she wanted to explore other opportunities after many seasons on the show.
Why did the show leave Hailey’s destination open?
In the Season 11 finale, Upton considers several possible career paths, including the FBI, FEMA and the DEA. She then heads to O’Hare, but the episode does not identify which job she takes. In a May 22, 2024 interview with TVLine, showrunner Gwen Sigan said that uncertainty was deliberate: “I wanted this idea that the world is hers now, and that she’s finally in a headspace where she can see that there’s a lot out there and there’s a lot you can choose.” She added, “Leaving it that open-ended gave that feeling of possibility.”

The finale therefore gives Upton a direction—toward a life and career she can choose for herself—without naming a specific agency or confirming that she has moved away. Sigan’s explanation was about the creative purpose of the ending, not a hidden answer about which job Upton accepted.
How does the finale set up that choice?
Upton’s departure follows personal and professional strain. TVLine’s May 21, 2024 coverage says Jay Halstead left for Bolivia, stopped returning her calls and extended his tour without telling her; their divorce became official early in Season 11. Upton responded by throwing herself into work and pushing herself hard physically. In the finale, an injured Hank Voight gives her his blessing to pursue what makes her happy. Sigan described that support as significant because Upton had not experienced unconditional parental support in her life.

That context helps explain why the open ending matters: Upton is not simply being assigned a new post on screen. She is being shown at a point where she can imagine choices beyond the life she has been living.
Why did Tracy Spiridakos leave Chicago P.D.?
Spiridakos’s decision as an actor is distinct from Upton’s fictional choice. She had played Upton as a recurring character beginning in Season 4 and became a regular in Season 5. The Season 11 finale was her final regular appearance in the 2024 run, after six full seasons as a regular.

In TVLine’s May 21, 2024 report, Spiridakos said she decided at the end of Season 10 that she wanted to do one more year. She called leaving “a hard decision — very, very hard,” and explained: “I was just curious what was out there for me and wanted to switch it up, and that was it.” She described her affection for the cast, crew, producers and writers; her stated reason was curiosity about other opportunities, not a disclosed production dispute.
Was the door left open for Upton to return?
Yes. In the 2024 TVLine interview, Sigan said “the door is open” for a future return, reflecting her view that characters continue to exist in the world of the show even when they are no longer on screen. That left room for Upton’s story to continue, but it did not promise a return or specify when one would happen.

Did the 2026 crossover resolve Upton and Jay’s story?
It added a relationship update, but not a complete answer. CinemaBlend’s March 6, 2026 coverage of the “Reckoning” crossover reports that Upton and Halstead returned, apologized to each other, and went out for a drink. The report says Halstead apologized for how he left Chicago and for losing Upton; Upton apologized as well. Sigan said the returning actors were happy with the scenes they were offered.
The crossover did not establish that the pair reunited permanently, explain what happened to Upton’s career, or confirm their longer-term plans. It revisited their relationship without replacing the finale’s unanswered career question.
