To begin, learn the basic six-count rhythm, practise it at a comfortable pace, then add a partner and get feedback in a beginner class or social-dance setting. “Shag” can mean different dances; this guide is specifically about Carolina Shag.
What is Carolina Shag?
Carolina Shag is a smooth partner dance performed to rhythm and blues and closely tied to the beach-music tradition of the Carolinas. The Carolina Shag Club describes it as a six-count dance. That count is a starting point, not a complete technical syllabus: timing, comfortable partnering and practice matter as much as memorizing steps.
South Carolina designated the Shag its official state dance through Act Number 329 of 1984. The state’s state symbols page also connects it with rhythm and blues and says dancers should keep the basic step in time with the music.
Where did the dance come from?
There is no settled single-origin story. A South Carolina educational history says the dance probably developed from the Charleston and Jitterbug, and describes later connections with the Big Apple and beach dancing. That account presents a likely lineage, not a definitive inventor, date or sole source.

How to learn the basic Carolina Shag step
Start with the rhythm rather than trying to copy turns or styling immediately. The sequence below is a practical beginner approach, not a prescribed or experimentally validated teaching method.

- Listen for the pulse. Put on rhythm and blues or beach music and listen for a steady beat before stepping.
- Learn the six-count basic. Work with a beginner lesson that teaches the basic step slowly. Keep the movement comfortable and the count steady; the South Carolina state page specifically emphasizes staying in time with the music.
- Practise at an easy pace. Repeat the basic on your own until you can keep the rhythm without rushing. Add turns only after the basic feels familiar.
- Add a partner. Focus first on shared timing and a relaxed connection rather than pulling through the steps or trying to lead elaborate figures.
- Get feedback and keep practising. A class or social dance gives you a chance to practise with another person and ask questions. If a step becomes uncomfortable, slow down and ask an instructor to check it.

In-person lessons and social dancing
In-person instruction is useful when you want feedback on timing and partnering. The Carolina Shag Club describes beginner lessons and social dancing; the Carolina Shag instructional site describes basic-step lessons, partnering instruction, private lessons and group instruction. These organizations describe their own offerings, not a guarantee of classes in every area. Check their current details before travelling, since schedules and fees can change.
Online lessons
A free video can help you see the basic step and turns. Dickson’s DanceTime published a beginner Carolina Shag lesson on May 7, 2020. Treat it as one introduction rather than a complete substitute for partner practice or feedback from an instructor.

An archived Society of Stranders publication advertised beginner instructional videos that presented basic steps slowly. That is evidence that such materials were advertised historically, not confirmation that the same videos are currently available to buy.
