Zendaya’s public reaction was unmistakably enthusiastic: immediately after Tom Holland’s Rihanna “Umbrella” routine, she called it “incredible” and “amazing.” After he won, she told him, “Tom, you killed it,” and said the performance was “so dope.” Those comments show what she thought of the performance; they do not establish what she privately felt or whether it changed her romantic feelings.
What Zendaya said right after the performance
Holland and Zendaya competed on Lip Sync Battle while promoting Spider-Man: Homecoming. After Holland finished his final number, Zendaya said, “Honestly? That was incredible, I’m not gonna lie,” then called it amazing. When he won, she praised him again: “Tom, you killed it” and “That was so dope.” She also recalled telling him during the routine, “You’re winning. You’re winning.” The exchange is transcribed here; it is a third-party transcript rather than an official broadcaster transcript.
What happened in the Lip Sync Battle
The pair performed separate numbers before Holland’s closing routine. Zendaya performed Bruno Mars’s “24K Magic,” while Holland began with “Singin’ in the Rain” and shifted into Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” complete with choreography and a rain effect. The Los Angeles Times reported that Holland had an extra day to rehearse and that Zendaya did not know his plan. The audience initially seemed to expect Zendaya’s “24K Magic” performance to win, making the switch in Holland’s routine a surprise.
How reporters described her reaction
Contemporaneous coverage described Zendaya’s visible astonishment, but that is different from knowing her private thoughts. TIME described her as watching in “open awe” and noted that she dropped to the ground. The Los Angeles Times likewise reported that Zendaya and host LL Cool J were visibly floored. These are journalists’ descriptions of what could be seen, not proof of a particular inner feeling.

What Zendaya remembered later
In a 2021 Esquire interview, Zendaya recalled the routine with a concise verdict: “He obviously killed it.” Her later recollection aligns with the praise she gave him on the show, while remaining a comment on the performance itself.
Did the performance reveal that Zendaya fell in love with Holland?
No verifiable statement in the available accounts says that the performance caused a romantic realization or began their relationship. Her recorded words establish that she admired the routine and was surprised by it; they do not establish a private turning point. The most grounded answer is therefore that Zendaya publicly praised Holland’s performance, while claims about what she secretly felt go beyond what she said.
