What happened to Matthew Perry’s finger?
Accounts describe an accident in which a door closed on Perry’s hand, injuring the tip of his right middle finger. A 2019 Fame10 account says the top part of the finger was missing and that Perry’s grandfather accidentally shut a car door on it while Perry was a child. A 2023 MEAWW account also describes a door accident, but says Perry was three and shut the door himself. Fame10’s 2019 account and MEAWW’s 2023 account therefore agree on the broad cause, not on the details.
Why do accounts differ about the accident?
The published versions conflict on two points: Perry’s age and who shut the door. The 2019 account identifies his grandfather and gives no specific age; the 2023 account says Perry was three and shut it himself. Neither version should be combined with the other as though the particulars were settled.
Matthew Perry’s memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, is a possible first-person follow-up for readers who want more of his life story. Hachette UK lists paperback and hardcover editions and gives 1 November 2022 as the UK audiobook’s on-sale date. Its reviewed listing does not provide the passage about the finger accident, so it does not resolve the discrepancy between the reports. Hachette UK’s book listing.

Is Chandler’s toe injury connected to Perry’s?
MEAWW points to a Friends Thanksgiving episode in which Chandler loses part of a toe as a comic parallel to Perry’s real-life finger injury. The report attributes the claim of an intentional creative connection to another outlet; it does not establish that the show’s writers based the storyline on Perry’s accident.
