Gomorrah is a five-season Italian crime drama about rival Camorra clans fighting for power in Naples. Its strength is not simply its violent turf wars: the series follows how loyalty, ambition and fear shift as relationships within the criminal world change. The “one of the best” label is a critical judgment, but it is an apt way to describe a saga whose bleakness is central to its storytelling.
What is Gomorrah about?
Set in Naples, Gomorrah centers on organized-crime clans and their struggles over power. Sky’s synopsis begins with a clan leader in prison and his right-hand man tasked with protecting the next in line; Hulu describes clans that fight and make temporary alliances. The result is a story shaped by shifting loyalties as much as by open conflict. Sky’s program listing also flags strong violence and language.
The drama focuses in particular on Gennaro “Genny” Savastano, played by Salvatore Esposito, and Ciro Di Marzio, played by Marco D’Amore. Their changing relationship gives the story a human through-line amid the larger contest for control. Power in this world is precarious: alliances can be useful one moment and dangerous the next.
Why it stands out as a mob saga
Naples is central to the story
The setting is not interchangeable with a generic crime backdrop. The series portrays criminal power rooted in Naples and its local clans, grounding its conflicts in a specific place. These are Camorra stories, not stories about Sicily’s Cosa Nostra.
#1 Best Overall
It treats power as corrosive
Gomorrah is less interested in romanticizing gangland glamour than in showing the cost of violence and the compromises demanded by power. Its characters may command fear, but the series’ stark outlook keeps that authority from looking like uncomplicated triumph. Betrayal and temporary cooperation follow naturally from a world where survival depends on reading other people’s ambitions.
Relationships change with the balance of power
Genny and Ciro’s shifting alliance is one reason the series can sustain a long crime saga without reducing it to a procession of turf disputes. Their personal history and competing interests give the struggle an emotional dimension, while the broader conflict among clans keeps the stakes moving.

Is Gomorrah based on a book?
Yes. Warner Bros. Discovery describes the series as based on Roberto Saviano’s bestselling book about Naples under Camorra rule. The television drama should not be treated as a documentary or as a one-to-one account of real people and incidents: the official description establishes the book as its basis, not that every character or event is a literal depiction. Warner Bros. Discovery’s description also credits Sky Italia and Cattleya, part of ITV Studios, as producers, in collaboration with Beta Film.
How many seasons and episodes are there?
Sky lists five seasons. Hulu’s US listing gives the series as five seasons and 58 episodes. Episode counts can be presented differently across services, so 58 is best understood as Hulu’s catalog figure rather than a universal platform count.

Where can you watch Gomorrah?
Availability depends on country and can change as streaming rights move. The HBO Max framing in the original 2022 article is not a guarantee that the series is available there now, or in every market. At the time of its current US guide, JustWatch lists HBO Max and HBO Max Amazon Channel; Sky lists the show on Sky Atlantic in its market. Check the listings for your country before subscribing or renting, and confirm which seasons are included. JustWatch’s US listing is specific to the United States, not a worldwide catalog.

The series is a strong choice for viewers who want a sustained crime drama built around clan politics, unstable alliances and morally compromised characters, rather than a heroic law-enforcement perspective. Its bleak tone and strong-violence warning make it a less suitable pick for viewers looking for a restrained or light crime story.
