Gravity is a visually persuasive space-survival drama, not a scientifically exact account of orbital flight. Alfonso Cuarón made scientific credibility a priority, but expert analyses identify important liberties—especially in the film’s orbital mechanics and debris scenario. And while Gravity may rank highly on particular critics’ lists, no universal authority has established it as one of the best films of the 21st century or the most accurate science-fiction film ever.
What is Gravity about?
Alfonso Cuarón’s 2013 film stars Sandra Bullock as astronaut Ryan Stone and George Clooney as astronaut Matt Kowalski. After an orbital-debris event puts them in danger, the story follows their struggle to survive in space. UCLA astronomer Jean-Luc Margot describes the film and its endangered shuttle crew in his discussion of Gravity.
Is Gravity officially one of the best films of the 21st century?
There is no universal or official title for “one of the best films of the 21st century.” That phrase only has a precise meaning when tied to a named list, its publisher, publication year, and placement. Rotten Tomatoes has a 100 Greatest Movies of the 21st Century list, compiled from critics’ and users’ input with editorial review. The existence of that list does not establish that Gravity appears on it, nor does one publisher’s selection represent a consensus across film critics.
How scientifically accurate is Gravity?
The film takes the appearance and experience of spaceflight seriously, but its dramatic setup and some of its orbital details do not hold up as a literal account of how objects move in orbit. Cuarón said in a 2013 CNN interview, “The most important thing was to get right the science on screen.” He also acknowledged scientific flaws and defended some choices as decisions made for the story. His stated aim is evidence of intent, not proof that every scene is physically plausible.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Orbital mechanics and the debris event
A Washington Post discussion with science adviser Kevin Grazier and NASA engineer Robert Frost points to problems involving the film’s orbital destinations and the debris event. The film’s sequence makes different locations in orbit seem reachable as though they were nearby stops, but orbital motion does not work like moving between points on a map: spacecraft at different orbital paths can have different speeds and trajectories, and reaching another orbit requires a suitable transfer. The debris scenario is also part of the film’s dramatic construction, rather than a dependable depiction of how such an event would unfold.
Margot identifies another conspicuous liberty: the shuttle’s rapid roll after a debris collision. That moment contributes to the scene’s intensity, but he considers it unrealistic. Taken together, these criticisms mean the film should not be treated as a lesson in orbital navigation or collision physics.

Visual realism and dramatic license
Scientific accuracy is not one single quality. A film can look and feel convincing while taking liberties with physical events to keep a story moving. Cuarón described the goal as being “as respectful and accurate as possible” within the fiction, as quoted by Space.com’s fact-versus-fiction interview. That distinction is useful: Gravity aims for a serious visual impression of spaceflight, but it is still a dramatic survival story, not a documentary reconstruction.
Mexico’s Secretariat of Culture recorded Cuarón describing the film as “acerca del impulso de vida,” translated as “about the impulse of life,” in an October 18, 2013 report. The phrase captures why a filmmaker might prioritize the emotional arc over strict physical plausibility.

Is it the most accurate science-fiction movie ever?
The available expert discussions do not establish an authoritative ranking that makes Gravity the most accurate science-fiction film ever. Nor do they offer a controlled comparison across films using the same criteria. Calling any movie “the most accurate” without defining the comparison—orbital physics, microgravity, spacecraft design, visual realism, or another measure—turns a judgment into a false certainty.
A more defensible verdict is that Gravity is visually committed to spaceflight realism while taking significant liberties with orbital mechanics and the events that drive its plot. It can be admired as cinematic fiction without treating it as an exact model of spaceflight.
