After Blue Origin’s New Shepard capsule landed on April 14, 2025, Jeff Bezos opened the hatch and Lauren Sánchez exited first, according to news reports. That sequence prompted online questions because some viewers said a short clip appears to show the hatch opening and closing before Bezos approaches with a tool. The available reporting does not explain the capsule-specific procedure, and it does not establish that the operation—or the flight—was staged or unsafe.
What happened after the New Shepard landing?
Blue Origin reported that New Shepard mission NS-31 completed its 11th human spaceflight on April 14, 2025. The six-person crew was Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyễn, Gayle King, Katy Perry, Kerianne Flynn and Lauren Sánchez. The company described the flight as successful. Blue Origin’s mission report
The Associated Press and PBS NewsHour reported that Bezos opened the capsule hatch minutes after touchdown and Sánchez emerged first. Those accounts establish the publicly reported sequence, but do not explain the hatch’s latch arrangement or why the ground-side procedure unfolded that way. Associated Press · PBS NewsHour
Why did Jeff Bezos open the hatch?
The reporting confirms that Bezos opened it after landing; it does not say why he, rather than a crew member, performed that step. A video that appears unusual is not enough to identify the reason: without the vehicle-specific procedure, it is not possible to tell whether the observed approach, tool use or apparent opening and closing reflects a routine step, a crew action, or something else.

Blue Origin has described a post-landing hatch-opening and capsule-exit rehearsal during an astronaut rehearsal for an earlier New Shepard flight. That provides limited context that egress was rehearsed in the program, not a procedural account of NS-31. The public description does not identify the NS-31 latch, tool, operator roles, or whether the crew had opened and then reclosed the hatch. Blue Origin’s rehearsal report
Could the crew open the hatch from inside?
The sources available for this flight do not establish whether or how NS-31 crew members could operate this capsule’s hatch from inside. NASA’s Spaceflight Human System Standard Volume 2 states: “For nominal operations, hatches and doors shall be operable by a single crewmember in no more than 60 seconds, from both sides of the hatch.” That is a general NASA standard, not evidence that it governed New Shepard or that this capsule complied with it. Nor does an FAA authorization answer the design question. The FAA explains that Congress limits its oversight of commercial human-spaceflight occupant health and safety, subject to exceptions; its rules address matters including crew qualifications, training and public safety. An FAA license should not be read as an all-purpose passenger-safety certification. FAA, “Human Space Flight”

The public accounts establish that Bezos opened the hatch and Sánchez exited first. The sources cited here do not establish that the sequence was staged, that the hatch malfunctioned, or that the crew could not open it. The exact mechanism and rationale remain unexplained in the available public reporting, so a short clip cannot settle those claims.

A separate viral claim about a “fake hand” in the capsule should not be treated as evidence about this hatch sequence. Lead Stories reported that the circulated image came from a 2017 New Shepard test flight, not NS-31. Correcting that image’s attribution does not explain the 2025 hatch operation.
