The recurring instrumental “James Bond Theme” is not the same as a film’s vocal title song. Bond films may also feature a separate love theme or another prominent song. Keeping those categories distinct makes it easier to see who composed, arranged, wrote and performed each piece—and why there is no single sound that defines every Bond song.

What does “Bond theme song” mean?

The phrase is used for three related kinds of music: the recurring instrumental “James Bond Theme,” a particular film’s main title song, and other songs or love themes associated with a film. They are not interchangeable. A singer may perform a film’s title song, for example, while the familiar Bond Theme remains instrumental.

The examples below focus on songs and credits that can be attributed to institutional or official Bond sources. They are representative, not a complete credit list for every film.

Who wrote the James Bond Theme?

Monty Norman composed the original “James Bond Theme” for Dr. No (1962). John Barry arranged Norman’s composition for a larger big-band sound, and guitarist Vic Flick played the original guitar part on the recording. Those are distinct contributions: Norman was the composer, Barry the arranger, and Flick the performer of that guitar part, according to the Library of Congress and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Barry went on to become a defining musical voice for the films. The Library of Congress says he wrote scores for 11 Bond films and assisted in composing title songs; the Academy describes him as the most consistent musical voice from From Russia with Love through The Living Daylights.

Who sang or wrote the Bond theme for each film?

“Who sang the James Bond theme song?” can mean either the recurring instrumental or a film’s vocal title song. The recurring piece has no singer; the table identifies vocalists where the sources establish them and separates them from songwriters, lyricists and score composers.

Film and year Song and type Supported credits and context
Goldfinger (1964) “Goldfinger,” vocal title song Performed by Shirley Bassey, with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley. John Barry composed, arranged and conducted the score. The official Bond site announced a remastered soundtrack release.
Thunderball (1965) “Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” an earlier theme; the film’s final theme is a separate song Dionne Warwick sang “Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” which was rejected. The Academy says John Barry commissioned Don Black to write a replacement theme. This account does not establish the full recording credits for the released “Thunderball” song.
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) Main-title instrumental; “We Have All the Time in the World,” a love theme David Arnold describes the main title as a powerful instrumental and distinguishes it from the love theme, performed by Louis Armstrong. The official Bond site announced an expanded two-CD soundtrack edition.
Live and Let Die (1973) “Live and Let Die,” vocal title song Written by Paul McCartney and recorded with Wings. The Library of Congress notes that producers initially envisioned a female vocalist; B.J. Arnau’s version was recorded and released, but McCartney’s became the successful version.
The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) “Nobody Does It Better,” vocal title song Music by Marvin Hamlisch and recorded by Carly Simon. The Library of Congress describes it as a worldwide hit; the credits cited here do not establish a lyricist.
Skyfall (2012) “Skyfall,” vocal title song Co-written by Adele and producer Paul Epworth. The Library of Congress identifies it as the first Bond title song to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Spectre (2015) “Writing’s on the Wall,” vocal title song Co-written and performed by Sam Smith with Jimmy Napes. Sony Pictures Entertainment’s announcement quotes producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli praising the song and Smith’s vocal performance.
No Time to Die (2021) “No Time to Die,” vocal title song Written by Billie Eilish with her brother FINNEAS and performed by Eilish. The official Bond announcement quotes producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli describing it as crafted for the film’s emotional story.

What makes a song sound like Bond?

There is no one musical style shared by every Bond title song. Composer David Arnold put it this way in an official James Bond interview: “Over the years, the idea of what is a Bond song has changed. If you put ‘Live And Let Die’, ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ and ‘You Only Live Twice’ in a line, they’re all completely different songs, stylistically, but they are all Bond songs. Once they’ve been in a Bond movie they are Bond songs. There is a core of attitude that binds them all together.”

That view leaves room for differences in sound and performance. It also highlights why the credits matter: a song’s identity can reflect the work of its songwriter, lyricist, arranger, score composer and vocalist, not just the name on the soundtrack cover.

In a TechRadar report quoting Arnold about the 2026 game 007 First Light, he offered a separate creative view of title songs: “A title song has to tell us about the world we are about to enter into. It has to intrigue, excite, and beckon us in.” That is Arnold’s perspective, not a rule that every Bond song must follow.

Which Bond theme songs won an Oscar?

The Library of Congress reported in 2022 that three Bond title songs had won the Academy Award for Best Original Song: “Skyfall,” “Writing’s on the Wall” and “No Time to Die.” “Skyfall” was the first Bond title song to receive the award; the two later songs also won.

Is there a Bond theme for the 007 First Light game?

Yes. The official Bond site says Lana Del Rey and David Arnold co-wrote and performed “First Light,” the theme for the game 007 First Light. The Flight composed the game score. The game launched globally on May 28, 2026, according to that page. This is a game theme, not a feature-film title song.

Where can you hear the film arrangements?

The official Bond site has announced a remastered soundtrack release for Goldfinger and an expanded two-CD edition of the On Her Majesty’s Secret Service soundtrack. These are soundtrack releases, not verified complete compilations of every Bond title song. Check the edition’s track list and availability before buying.
