The original Maula Jatt is a 1979 Pakistani Punjabi film about a feud between the farmer Maula Jatt and the formidable Noori Natt. Directed by Yunus Malik and written by Nasir Adeeb, it helped popularize the Punjabi “Gandasa” film tradition. Fawad Khan’s The Legend of Maula Jatt (2022) revisits those characters and themes, but tells a new story rather than remaking the original scene for scene.

What is the story of the original Maula Jatt?

In the 1979 film, Sultan Rahi plays Maula Jatt, a Punjabi farmer drawn into a cycle of clan feud, revenge and honour. His great rival is Noori Natt, played by Mustafa Qureshi. The conflict is presented in the heightened style of a vigilante tale: a larger-than-life hero faces a powerful antagonist, and personal and family loyalties drive the violence.

Maula’s gandasa—a farming implement used as a weapon—helps define the film’s action and its imagery. The story is not simply about a weapon or a single feud; it uses the clash between Maula and Noori to stage questions of justice, honour and retaliation.

How does the film connect to “Gandasa” and Wehshi Jatt?

The original film belongs to a lineage that reaches back to Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi’s Urdu short story “Gandasa.” According to The News on Sunday, Qasmi’s story inspired Wehshi Jatt, and Maula Jatt was a sequel to that earlier film. This is a connection of inspiration and film lineage; it does not establish that the 1979 movie directly adapts every element of Qasmi’s story.

The distinction matters: Qasmi’s short story, Wehshi Jatt and Maula Jatt are related, but they are not interchangeable titles for the same work. The 1979 film’s distinctive hero-rival pairing and memorable dialogue helped make it a landmark of Punjabi popular cinema.

What does the gandasa mean in the film?

In practical terms, a gandasa is an agricultural implement that Maula wields as a weapon. In the film, it also becomes a symbol within a story of injustice, resistance and honour. Nasir Adeeb, who wrote the original film, described its meaning to Al Jazeera in 2022: “Gandasa was and remains a weapon against injustice, a symbol of honour.” That is Adeeb’s interpretation of the symbol, rather than a universal definition of the tool or of Punjabi culture.

The film’s rural imagery, clan loyalties, stylized violence and outsized rivals helped establish the “Gandasa” film tradition. Al Jazeera reported that the 1979 movie was banned by Zia-ul-Haq’s government on grounds of “violence and subversive culture,” then returned to screens and helped spawn the genre. The report does not establish the exact legal order or dates.

Is The Legend of Maula Jatt a remake?

No: director Bilal Lashari described the 2022 film as a new story using the original’s lead characters and some famous dialogue. An Associated Press of Pakistan report, quoting Lashari’s BBC interview, gives his explanation: “Overall, it’s not a remake but throughout a new story with many new characters while using just the lead characters and few famous dialogues from the 1979 version.”

Maula Jatt (1979) Yunus Malik directed Nasir Adeeb’s story, with Sultan Rahi as Maula and Mustafa Qureshi as Noori Natt. Its feud, revenge and honour themes helped define the Gandasa film tradition.
The Legend of Maula Jatt (2022) Retains Maula and Noori and echoes themes and some famous dialogue, while introducing new characters, a new plot and a fuller account of Maula’s origins. Bilal Lashari described it as a reimagining, not a straightforward remake.

Lashari said he wanted to tell Maula’s story from its genesis, give him a complete arc and include Easter eggs for people familiar with the original. He wrote the 2022 screenplay in English; Adeeb later worked on its Punjabi dialogue. Lashari also described his setting as a fantasy Punjab in a pre-industrial, pre-colonial era, without a printing press or gunpowder. That is the later film’s invented world, not a documented historical setting for the 1979 story. Al Jazeera also quoted Lashari calling the 2022 film a “hard reboot” set in an unknown time in a fantasy world he called “Parallel Punjab.”

Why did the original’s characters and style endure?

The original gave Noori Natt a dramatic entrance and Maula a catchword—“Sohneya”—that Lashari said became a phenomenon in Punjabi cinema. The stark rivalry, recognizable rural setting and gandasa-centered action gave audiences a memorable framework that the later film could revisit without repeating the old plot.

Lashari told The News on Sunday: “It’s a genre that always fascinated me, and I’d wonder why it had never evolved through the decades.” His 2022 film’s expanded backstories and fantasy setting reflect that aim to develop the characters and genre rather than simply reproduce the earlier film’s story.
