Reba Rakshit was an Indian circus stunt performer whose act was later described as an elephant walking across her chest. That description needs careful context: Ida Jo Pajunen’s biography recounts both the arrangement of the stunt and a separate show that was stopped before the elephant stepped onto Rakshit. The dramatic scenes come from excerpts of the biography, not independent contemporaneous reports.
Who was Reba Rakshit?
Rakshit is the subject of Ida Jo Pajunen’s biography, Strong Woman Reba Rakshit: The Life and Times of a Stuntmaster, published by Om Books International. A 2024 Scroll excerpt introduces her as a circus performer and follows the development of the elephant stunt. The publisher’s catalogue and retrospective cultural coverage also describe the elephant act as part of her performance history.
The phrase “lifted an elephant on her chest” is a headline description, not a claim that Rakshit raised an elephant herself. The accounts describe an act involving a plank and an elephant walking over or across her chest.
What do the two excerpts say about the stunt?
Scroll: the stunt is proposed and arranged
In the passage published by Scroll on January 10, 2024, Ghosh proposes the elephant stunt, contacts a circus owner in Calcutta, and obtains agreement to bring a young elephant. The excerpt recounts the plan; it does not describe the elephant walking onto Rakshit in that scene.

Telegraph India: a performance is stopped
A separate excerpt published by Telegraph India on January 15, 2024, describes Rakshit lying beneath a wooden plank while an elephant circles. She signals that something is wrong, Ghosh stops the act, and the elephant is led away before stepping onto her. In Pajunen’s account, a knife is then found in the mattress.
The stopped scene and the broader claim about Rakshit’s act are not the same episode. The Telegraph India feature and excerpt presents the halted performance as a particular incident; it does not establish that an elephant crossed her chest during that show. Nor does that scene, by itself, disprove the broader performance history described elsewhere.
