Meena Kumari wrote poetry under the name Naaz, a literary identity distinct from—but inseparable from—the celebrated film performer. Her Urdu collection Tanha Chand and a later translated selection offer readers a way to encounter that written voice without reducing it to her screen image as the “Tragedy Queen.”
Who was Naaz?
Naaz was Meena Kumari’s pen name, not a separate poet. Rekhta identifies her both as a major film actress and as a poet who wrote under that name. The distinction matters: the poems are her own work, not simply an extension of the characters she played. Rekhta’s profile of Meena Kumari Naaz provides this biographical context.
The familiar “Tragedy Queen” label describes a popular image associated with her film career; it is not a literary assessment. The available catalog and publication notice establish that she wrote poetry and that books of it were published, but they do not establish a definitive critical consensus about its themes or standing.
What is Tanha Chand?
Tanha Chand is the principal Urdu collection identified in the available catalog record. Rekhta lists Meena Kumari Naaz as author, Gulzar as editor, Shama Book Depo in New Delhi as publisher, Urdu as the language, and poetry/collection as the category. The record gives its length as 91 pages. Its description says it was published according to Kumari’s wish; that is the catalog’s account. See Rekhta’s catalog entry for Tanha Chand.
#1 Best Overall
The collection’s Urdu publication is important when choosing a copy: a listing for Tanha Chand does not by itself mean that the text is translated into English. Check the language and edition details of the specific copy.
Is there an English translation?
A Jamia Millia Islamia press release dated August 4, 2014 documents a book titled Meena Kumari: The Poet: A Life Beyond Cinema. It describes the book as a selection of her poems in original Urdu, translated by Noorul Hasan, with an introduction by Daisy Hasan and Philip Bounds. This is evidence of a translated selection, not a complete collected works edition. The notice reports a release event jointly organized by the Jamia Cultural Committee’s Literary Club and Roli Books; it does not establish present-day stock or the exact contents and language of every edition now sold. Read Jamia Millia Islamia’s release notice.

- Used Book in Good Condition
If you are comparing editions, look for whether the book presents the Urdu originals, translated poems, or both; whether it is Tanha Chand or a selection; and which translator, editor, and introductory material are identified. The available publication information is not enough to rank translations or establish how complete any edition currently on sale is.
Why read her poems apart from her films?
A statement attributed to Kumari, reproduced in Hindi Varta’s July–September 2010 issue, draws a clear line between acting and writing: “Only what I write is originally born from within me, representing what I wish to say.” The longer passage contrasts acting—where a concept, character, script, and direction may come from other people—with writing as a more direct expression of what she wished to say. This is the statement as reproduced by Hindi Varta, rather than a quotation verified here against an original recording, diary, or manuscript. Read the Hindi Varta issue.

That distinction offers a useful starting point for readers, not a shortcut to interpreting the poems. The fact that a poem is written by an actor does not make it a confession, and the available catalog description and release notice do not establish that the poems are autobiographical. Read the words in the edition itself, and keep the screen persona separate from claims about the writer’s private life.

-
For the cataloged Urdu collection, look for Tanha Chand by Meena Kumari Naaz, edited by Gulzar. Confirm that the copy is in Urdu and matches the edition you intend to read.
-
For a translated selection, look for Meena Kumari: The Poet: A Life Beyond Cinema and verify the translator and language in the specific edition.
-
As you read, treat “Tragedy Queen” as film-history context rather than a verdict on the poetry. The publication records establish the books and their credits; they do not settle the poems’ themes or literary reception.
