There is no universal theatre seat-numbering system. A venue may number seats on either side of an aisle with odd and even numbers, give the center block a separate sequence, or skip certain row letters. To find your actual seat, match the venue and auditorium, level or section, row, and seat number against the seating chart for your event.
What the seat number tells you—and what it doesn’t
A ticket’s location is a combination of identifiers: the venue or auditorium, level or section, row, and seat number. The seating chart shows where those identifiers fall in relation to the stage, aisles, entrances, and other sections. A seat number by itself does not tell you reliably which side of the theatre you are on or how close you are to the stage.
Some venues use odd numbers on one side of a section and even numbers on the other. A center block may have its own consecutive sequence, sometimes beginning at 100 or 101. These are common patterns, not a standard: venues differ in which side is odd or even, how center seats are numbered, and where numbering begins.
Why theatre seat numbers may not be consecutive
Two seats next to each other do not always have consecutive numbers. In a layout that separates odd and even side sections from a center section, adjacent seats can have numbers from different sequences. Kodak Center explains this arrangement for its own sections; its example is a reminder to check positions on the chart rather than judging proximity by the numbers alone (Kodak Center seating information).

If you are asking, “My seats are not in numerical order. Are they together?”, compare both tickets against the same event’s seating chart. If their positions are unclear, ask the venue’s box office whether they are adjacent.
How to read your ticket against the seating chart
- Confirm the venue and auditorium. A venue may have multiple rooms or configurations, so open the chart for the specific event and space.
- Find the level or section. Match the ticket’s section or level label to the corresponding part of the chart.
- Locate the row. Find the row label within that section. Row letters and their order are venue-specific.
- Find the seat number in that row. Use the chart’s labels and aisle positions; do not assume odd or even numbers identify a particular side.
- Check the route. Look for entrances, aisles, stairs, and access markings if the approach to the seat matters to you.
- Verify uncertain or nonconsecutive seats. Compare the plotted positions or ask the box office whether the seats are together.
Why numbering conventions vary
Odd and even sides are not assigned the same way everywhere
Santa Fe Opera’s Crosby Theatre map labels house right as even and house left as odd. Loos Center for the Arts does the reverse: even numbers are on house left and odd numbers on house right. South Coast Repertory’s Segerstrom Stage also labels house right even and house left odd. These venue maps show why it is unsafe to assume that a particular side is always odd or even (Santa Fe Opera seating map; Loos Center for the Arts seating chart; South Coast Repertory Segerstrom Stage map).

“House left” and “house right” are venue-facing labels, not a substitute for reading the map from your own viewpoint. Follow the chart’s labels and stage orientation rather than guessing which side a ticket describes.
Center blocks may have their own sequence
Santa Fe Opera numbers its center seats consecutively from 100; Loos Center for the Arts uses center seats numbered 101 and above. South Coast Repertory’s Segerstrom Stage also begins center seating at 101 and increases from the left. The precise starting point and direction are specific to each chart. Theatre Manager documentation describes side odd/even sections and center numbers in the 100s as typical examples, while noting that its software supports different layouts (Theatre Manager seating documentation).

Row letters may be skipped
Some venues omit a row letter to prevent it being confused with a number. Loos Center for the Arts, for example, skips row I because it can look like the numeral 1. Other venues may use different row sequences, so do not infer that every letter appears or that rows progress identically from one auditorium to another (Loos Center for the Arts seating chart).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check access, stairs, and seat labels
Accessibility markings and routes are venue-specific. Santa Fe Opera’s Crosby Theatre map identifies wheelchair locations and places with no stairs. Kodak Center notes that access to some loge and balcony seats requires stairs. Those details should not be generalized to other theatres: check the current chart and confirm the route and seating details with the venue’s box office or access team if you need wheelchair access, a transfer arrangement, or a step-free route (Santa Fe Opera seating map; Kodak Center seating information).
