A group of Milwaukee artists turned one 1998 storyline into a black-and-white 16-mm film, combining deliberately awkward performances with eerie sound and, by accident, chemical marks on the film. The result was a collaborative artwork made without plans for fame that later found a life in online uploads.
What is Mary Worth – the Movie?
It is a shot-for-shot live-action adaptation of a specific Mary Worth comic-strip storyline published from May 17 to June 13, 1998. The newspaper strip itself had been running since 1938, according to Ben Coxworth’s 2025 New Atlas feature.
Rather than make the characters move and speak naturally, the film turns the comic’s panels into held scenes: actors maintain stiff poses and deliver the dialogue in stilted voices. The effect can feel uncanny, but it follows the source material’s visual logic. A comic panel freezes a moment; the movie makes that stillness part of the performance.
How a Milwaukee collaboration became a film
The project came together in Milwaukee in summer 1998. The group began with an idea contest, and filmmaker and musician Brent Goodsell’s proposal won. He later recalled, “I submitted Mary Worth because I had recently realized how strange the Mary Worth comic strip was, and it was just something in my head at the time.” Using an existing storyline also meant the dialogue was already written.

Although video was available, the group shot on black-and-white 16-mm film. More than a dozen people took turns working across directing, cinematography, sound recording and acting. The production account in New Atlas presents it as shared work among friends and artists, rather than a conventional studio project.
Playwright, actress and performance artist Theresa Columbus remembered the strip’s peculiar tone: “Mary Worth comics are not funny funny, but they are odd, and so melodramatic in an old-fashioned kind of way.” She also placed the film within a wider local scene: “A bunch of super-talented artists in Milwaukee at that time were collaborating on theater, music, and films, and I think a consistent theme was a strangeness and beauty in humor while playing with unexpected forms.”

Which parts of the film’s strange atmosphere were intentional?
The movie’s peculiar texture came from a mix of deliberate choices and unintended accidents. Its held poses consciously echo comic panels. In the selected edit, performers redubbed their dialogue, and the filmmakers used VocAlign to match the new recordings to the actors’ lip movements. Goodsell told New Atlas that when a redub strayed too far from its original timing, the software compressed it into the available rhythm. That could make the speech sound chopped or sped up.
The sound design adds another chosen layer: persistent whistling wind and a droning score give scenes an eerie quality. By contrast, the smears and bubbles visible in the image were not planned effects. New Atlas reports that delays in hand-processing the 16-mm stock led to chemical marks on the film.

Why did it become an internet curiosity?
The film was completed six years before YouTube or similar platforms existed. Its makers did not set out to create a viral release, and the participants were not aiming to build careers or make money from it. Stephanie Barber, a Philadelphia-based writer, visual artist and filmmaker, told New Atlas, “We weren’t really thinking about showing it when making it.”
Later, the film circulated through multiple online uploads. New Atlas points to an Activities Archive YouTube upload as the most complete version; that assessment and the availability of any particular upload can change. The feature does not provide a view count or establish when the film became a cult curiosity, so its reach should not be confused with that of a documented worldwide viral hit.

Where does it fit in the history of weird internet videos?
Mary Worth – the Movie is one example of an artwork that acquired an online afterlife, not a template for all strange web clips. By 2005, television outlets were already packaging internet oddities: a Multichannel News report said VH1 and IFILM planned Web Junk 20, a weekly collection that included independently made weird videos, television bloopers and celebrity mishaps.
In a 2020 Know Your Meme interview, video creator Wavywebsurf recalled encountering early Flash-video sites such as Albino Blacksheep and YouTube Poop, then later making videos about internet history and the stories behind old viral clips. That is one creator’s recollection, not a universal account of how audiences found unusual videos. It does help explain why provenance matters: people may want to know who made a memorable oddity and how it came to circulate, not just watch the clip.

What the film’s afterlife does—and does not—tell us
The film’s story is a contrast between private-scale collaboration and public online circulation. The Milwaukee group made a deliberately peculiar adaptation among friends; later uploads let viewers encounter it far beyond its original setting. But the available reporting does not quantify how many people saw it or pin down when that wider discovery occurred. Its appeal is easier to describe than to measure: comic-strip stillness, melodramatic dialogue, uneasy sound and an image marked by accidents of processing all meet in one short work.
