The Witcher season 4 has drawn a mixed critical response, not a unanimous rejection of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt. Critics’ main reservations often involve the season’s storytelling and the way it uses its new lead; some reviewers, however, say Hemsworth fits the role or makes it his own. The current scores are season-level aggregates, not ratings of his performance alone.
What are critics saying about The Witcher season 4?
As of October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes lists season 4 at 61% on its Tomatometer, based on 28 critic reviews. Its critics’ consensus says the show is “beginning to grow stale” and sets up its endgame without enough fun along the way. Metacritic gives the season 59/100 from 15 critic reviews, classifying the result as “Mixed or Average”; five reviews are positive and 10 are mixed. These are separate platforms with different scoring systems, and both figures describe the season rather than Hemsworth’s acting. Rotten Tomatoes · Metacritic

Is Liam Hemsworth good as Geralt?
Reviews offer a divided, qualified answer. PC Gamer’s Lauren Morton called Hemsworth’s performance “Fine,” arguing that the writing keeps Geralt behind his adventuring party and lets him fade into the background. Her point is as much about characterization as acting: she contrasts the show’s Geralt with the more talkative, sarcastic and wounded figure in Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel Baptism of Fire. PC Gamer

Other assessments are more approving. Decider’s Johnny Loftus wrote that Hemsworth fills Geralt’s boots “just fine,” while Collider’s Carly Lane said he makes the character his own over the season’s eight episodes; Metacritic reproduces excerpts from both reviews. These responses make “critics aren’t sold” a fair shorthand for reservations, but not a claim that critics broadly dismiss Hemsworth. Metacritic
Clint Worthington’s RogerEbert.com review identifies a related challenge: Hemsworth struggles to step out of his predecessor’s shadow while the story carries many plot threads. That criticism does not make the season’s reception a simple verdict on the recasting. Metacritic

How does the season’s story affect the reviews?
Story momentum and clarity are recurring points of contrast. Worthington sees pleasures for fans but also a series that appears to be running out of steam. TechRadar’s October 30, 2025 review found the opening episodes difficult to follow, while arguing that episodes 5–8 may rank among the franchise’s strongest. That is one reviewer’s reading of the season’s uneven shape, not a consensus that every viewer will share. TechRadar
The season’s function as a bridge toward the ending helps explain why some critics focus on setup. Netflix says seasons 4 and 5 were filmed back-to-back and together adapt the three remaining novels: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake. Season 4’s eight episodes were all streaming by December 10, 2025. Netflix Tudum

What changed with the new Geralt?
Season 4 introduced Liam Hemsworth as Geralt and Laurence Fishburne as Regis. Netflix announced the season as the penultimate one when production began; creator and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich described the cast as including “exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia.” Hemsworth said, “As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia.” Those statements establish the production context, but they are not evidence of how critics ultimately judged the performance. For viewers who want to see the adaptation move toward its planned endgame, season 4 offers that continuation, with later episodes drawing a more positive response from at least one reviewer than the opening stretch. For viewers primarily looking for a compelling new interpretation of Geralt, the reviews are less decisive: some find Hemsworth adequate or distinctive, while others feel the writing leaves him in the shadow of the character’s past portrayal. The middling critic aggregates and the much lower Rotten Tomatoes audience score indicate different responses from different groups, not a single verdict on the recasting.
