Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers have a documented creative relationship: Swift invited Bridgers to sing on “Nothing New,” both artists spoke warmly about the collaboration, and they later performed the song together. Those public facts show artistic respect and a friendly working connection; they do not establish how close the two are privately or what their relationship is today.
How Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers first connected
Bridgers said their first interaction was Swift’s invitation to sing on “Nothing New.” In a 2022 interview with The Guardian, Bridgers recalled initially associating the message with Aaron Dessner, then realizing Swift was asking her to join the song. She said they had never met or interacted before that invitation.
“Nothing New” was an older Swift song, written around the time of the original Red album. Bridgers’ vocals appeared on the 2021 re-recording, Red (Taylor’s Version). The Los Angeles Times described the remote recording process and noted that, as of its April 7, 2022 article, the pair had not yet met in person. That detail describes the situation at the time of publication, not necessarily later.

Swift praised Bridgers’ writing and singing to the Los Angeles Times: “The specificity of Phoebe’s lyrics, and the vulnerability she expresses in her voice when she delivers them, is what makes her music so deeply impactful and moving for me as a fan.”

Bridgers described the collaboration as both nerve-racking and supportive: “I was stressed and I wanted to get it right, but she was a great guide to me and approached everything with such care.” She also said that earning Swift’s trust was special. These comments support the view that they respected one another as artists and had a positive creative working relationship; they are not a measure of private closeness.
Public milestones after “Nothing New”
- March 2023: Bridgers presented Swift with the iHeartRadio Innovator Award.
- May 5, 2023: Bridgers joined Swift onstage to perform “Nothing New” at the Eras Tour concert in Nashville, as reported by Pitchfork.
- 2023 tour schedule: TIME reported that Bridgers was scheduled to join Swift for 12 tour stops. That is a contemporaneous schedule figure, not evidence of the artists’ private relationship.
So, are Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers friends?
The available public record supports calling them collaborators and friendly peers: Swift invited Bridgers onto a song, they spoke appreciatively about each other’s work, and they shared the stage. It does not provide a direct account of their private lives that would establish the depth or current status of their friendship.
Bridgers captured the surprise of the original invitation in her account to The Guardian: “I remember blacking out reading the text because we’d never met or interacted in any way, so to be asked as our first interaction was crazy.” That description is useful context for how the musical connection began—not proof for or against a friendship today.
