Elle also described both parents as athletes: her father, Steven J. Fanning, had played professional baseball. Asked how she learned to behave professionally, Elle credited her parents’ athletic experience and the discipline they taught their children: “It definitely came from my parents [tennis pro Heather Joy and Steven J. Fanning, a former professional baseball player].”
How did Joy help Dakota begin acting?
The available accounts describe successive stages, rather than competing explanations. In a retrospective account published by ELLE in 2026, Dakota recalled that her mother noticed her imaginative play and enrolled her in drama camp. Elle also said Joy saw Dakota acting around the house and put her in an acting program in Georgia.

Later, according to a 2017 Vogue profile of Elle, Joy relocated to California with Dakota so she could pursue commercials and pilot-season opportunities. The rest of the family joined them after Dakota booked I Am Sam. The coverage gives a picture of practical parental support—nurturing an interest, arranging early training, and accompanying Dakota as she sought work—without establishing a more detailed account of Joy’s role in the film industry.
What is known about her life beyond her daughters?
The cited profiles support a concise public picture: Joy Fanning was a professional tennis player, raised daughters with an emphasis on discipline, and supported Dakota’s early acting. They do not establish a detailed independent biography, including a complete tennis record, current occupation, earnings, or fuller personal history. Those details should not be treated as known on the basis of these accounts.

Is the Fanning family related to King Edward III?
A royal-ancestry story has circulated in secondary coverage. ELLE’s 2026 article repeats a claim that ancestry records connect the Fanning family to King Edward III and describes Dakota and Elle as his “22nd great-granddaughters,” attributing that framing to a 2014 People post. That is a reported genealogy claim, not a verified fact established by the cited profiles or an independently confirmed primary genealogy record.
