He became widely recognized as one half of Too Cool, but his career also included years in Memphis and the USWA. He died at 46 in July 2018 after being found in a Hardeman County, Tennessee, jail cell. A 2024 appeals-court ruling later addressed whether officers could be held personally liable under the legal standard in force at the time—not whether every aspect of the jail’s response was adequate.
Who was Brian Christopher Lawler?
Born in Memphis on January 10, 1972, Brian Christopher Lawler was the son of professional wrestler Jerry “The King” Lawler. He began wrestling professionally in 1989, following football at Craigmont High School, according to his family obituary reproduced by Legacy.com. The obituary also notes an early appearance with his father in the 1984 video Wimp Busters.

WWE remembered him as Grandmaster Sexay, a member of Too Cool during the Attitude Era. The Television Academy lists his ring names as Brian Christopher and Grand Master Sexay and describes his WWE/WWF work and partnership with Scotty 2 Hotty. Those identities explain why accounts of his life often use “Brian Christopher,” “Grandmaster Sexay” and “Jerry Lawler’s son” interchangeably.
What was his wrestling career and legacy?
Too Cool and WWE
Too Cool brought together Grandmaster Sexay, Scotty 2 Hotty and Rikishi. The act combined wrestling with a playful, dance-centered presentation; Lawler’s comic swagger and dancing were part of his recognizable on-screen character. WWE’s memorial identified him with Too Cool and the Attitude Era, while the Television Academy records one WWF Tag Team Championship won with the group.

The Television Academy biography also credits Lawler with 44 USWA titles and hundreds of television appearances between 1996 and 2014. The biography does not show a publication year, so these figures should be understood as the Academy’s published career totals rather than as independently dated statistics.
Memphis and regional wrestling
Lawler’s career was not limited to WWE. He wrestled in Memphis and the United States Wrestling Association (USWA), where his family name was already familiar. His obituary says he competed against his father in a series of matches from 1993 to 1996. That regional history is an important part of his career: his connection to Jerry Lawler shaped the public story, but Brian also built a lengthy record of his own in the Memphis wrestling scene.

What happened to Brian Christopher Lawler?
According to CBS News’ Associated Press report, citing the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Lawler was found hanging in his cell at Hardeman County Jail on Saturday, July 28, 2018. Officers performed CPR and he was taken to a Memphis hospital, where he died on July 29, aged 46. The report said he had been booked on July 7 on charges of driving under the influence, driving on a revoked license and evading arrest. These details describe the account attributed to state investigators and contemporaneous reporting; they do not establish a motive.
In its later account of the case, the Sixth Circuit said Lawler disclosed bipolar disorder, medications and previous withdrawal experience during intake, and reported a suicide attempt more than two years earlier. The opinion recounts that a screening response initially led to suicide-watch placement, but staff changed the answer after learning how long ago the earlier attempt had occurred; it also says Lawler answered no when asked whether he was currently thinking about suicide. These are details recited by the court, not a basis for drawing clinical conclusions about him.

What did the 2024 court ruling decide?
On February 16, 2024, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit issued its decision in Lawler v. Hardeman County. Judge Eric E. Murphy wrote, “In July 2018, Brian Lawler tragically committed suicide at a county jail.” The appeal concerned civil claims against jail officers and the denial of qualified immunity—not whether Lawler died or whether every jail practice was faultless.
The Sixth Circuit reversed the district court’s denial of qualified immunity to the officers. It said the clearly established law in 2018 required evidence that an officer subjectively believed there was a strong likelihood Lawler would take his life. The court explained that the circuit’s later approach, which could include reckless disregard of a strong risk, was not the clearly established rule at the time.

Qualified immunity is a legal protection against personal liability in certain civil-rights cases when the law governing an official’s conduct was not clearly established. The ruling therefore addressed the legal threshold for holding these officers personally liable under the claims before the court. It should not be read as a factual finding that no mistake or failure occurred, or as a general judgment on jail suicide prevention.

Lawler’s legacy includes a memorable WWE character, a championship run with Too Cool, and substantial work in the Memphis and USWA wrestling traditions. His death and the ensuing lawsuit became part of the public record, but they do not replace the wrestling career that made Grandmaster Sexay recognizable. WWE’s memorial statement recalled his Attitude Era persona; the Television Academy biography documents his team and career figures, and the family obituary preserves more of his regional and family context.
