Final Destination was inspired by a reported near-miss story, not by TWA Flight 800. Writer Jeffrey Reddick said an article about a woman who changed flights after her mother warned her sparked the idea. The real TWA disaster happened later, in 1996, and the film’s supernatural events are fictional.
What inspired Final Destination?
In a 2023 interview with the Los Angeles Times, writer Jeffrey Reddick said he had read an article about a woman who changed her flight after her mother called with a bad feeling. The plane she had planned to take later crashed. Reddick wondered what if she had been meant to die on that flight—and said that question became the seed of Final Destination.

Reddick has not identified the woman, the article, or the flight. The story’s original source and the woman’s experience have not been independently established in the available reporting. So the careful answer to “Is Final Destination based on a true story?” is that Reddick said a reported anecdote inspired its premise; that is not evidence that the film’s plot or characters are real.
How the idea became a film
Reddick first developed the idea as a spec script for The X-Files. The Los Angeles Times account describes that script as involving a premonition that leads a man to leave a doomed flight. After colleagues at New Line encouraged him, Reddick developed the concept into a feature treatment.

Was it inspired by TWA Flight 800?
No—not according to Reddick’s account of when he conceived the idea. TWA Flight 800 crashed on July 17, 1996, while Reddick told the Los Angeles Times that he wrote the X-Files spec script in 1994. That chronology rules out the 1996 disaster as the origin of the concept he described.
The film’s fictional doomed flight is often compared with TWA Flight 800, but a resemblance is not proof of inspiration. The distinction is important: the premise’s reported spark predates the disaster, even though the real crash is now a frequent point of comparison.

What happened to TWA Flight 800?
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation, TWA Flight 800, a Boeing 747-131, crashed into the Atlantic near East Moriches, New York, shortly after departing John F. Kennedy International Airport for Paris. All 230 people aboard died.
The NTSB’s probable-cause finding was an explosion of the center wing fuel tank after ignition of the flammable fuel-air mixture inside it. Investigators could not determine the ignition source with certainty. Among the sources they evaluated, they considered a short circuit outside the tank—allowing excessive voltage to enter through wiring associated with the fuel quantity indication system—the most likely. The NTSB also identified design and certification assumptions about fuel-tank explosions and heat sources beneath the tank as contributing factors, and issued safety recommendations.

Early eyewitness reports of a missile or contrail prompted investigators to consider both a potential crime scene and an accident scene. The Federal Aviation Administration’s historical account says examination of recovered parts found no evidence of bomb or missile debris. The investigation’s probable-cause finding was a fuel-tank explosion, not a missile strike.
The FAA also describes an NTSB-sponsored flight emulation in which the highest measured temperature in the tank’s ullage—the space above the fuel—was 145°F before taxi. That was a result of the emulation, not a temperature measured aboard the crashed aircraft.

The broad premise and the specific way Death operates in the franchise are not the same creative claim. Reddick has described the flight-warning anecdote as the spark for the concept. In the 2023 Los Angeles Times interview, director and co-writer James Wong said the idea of Death as an invisible force acting through objects came from the screenplay by Wong and Glen Morgan, and that Reddick did not contribute to that element. Their accounts differ on authorship of that distinctive conception; it is more accurate to attribute each claim than to present the franchise’s development as uncontested solo authorship.
