Yes. The 2007 Australian film Black Water was inspired by a real saltwater crocodile attack in the Northern Territory, but it is a fictionalized survival story—not a literal account of the people or events. In December 2003, Brett Mann was taken by a crocodile in the Finniss River; his two companions survived after sheltering in a tree for almost 22 hours.

What happened in the Finniss River

On 21 December 2003, 22-year-old Brett Mann was on a biking trip with friends Ashley McGough and Shaun Blowers, both 19, when they entered the Finniss River in the Northern Territory. Contemporary ABC News reporting said Mann was taken by a saltwater crocodile.

McGough and Blowers climbed into a tree and remained there for nearly 22 hours before a helicopter found them. ABC reported that the men told police the crocodile stayed near the tree; they also saw it swim past with Mann’s remains. Those details are attributed to the companions’ account as reported at the time, rather than presented as independently established investigative findings. The search was later called off, as reported by ABC News.

How the film changes the real story

Black Water shifts the event into a fictional setup: Adam, his girlfriend Grace, and Grace’s younger sister Lee go fishing with a guide in northern Australia. After their boat capsizes in a mangrove swamp, they are stranded in a tree with a crocodile below. The real incident involved three male friends on a biking trip and an attack in a river, not the film’s fishing excursion and cast of characters. The Australian National Film and Sound Archive’s curator notes characterize the movie as based on a true story; Sony describes it as inspired by true events.

#1 Best Overall

Director Andrew Traucki said in an interview that the filmmakers had not spoken with the survivors. He described researching crocodile attacks in northern Australia, including another attack that informed their research. That supports a connection to the real incident and broader subject research, but not a claim that the film recreates the survivors’ testimony.

Where Black Water was filmed

The film is set in northern Australia’s crocodile country, but most of it was filmed at Georges River in Sydney’s southern suburbs, according to the NFSA’s curatorial notes. Only a small amount of footage was shot in the north. The story’s setting and the production’s main filming location are therefore different.

What is known—and what the sources do not establish

The contemporary news reports support the basic account: Mann was killed in the Finniss River incident, while McGough and Blowers survived after sheltering in a tree until rescue. The available reporting cited here does not establish further postmortem findings, exact attack mechanics, or a definitive identification of the crocodile. The clearest description of the movie’s relationship to the incident is therefore that it was inspired by a real attack and dramatizes the premise with fictional people and circumstances.
