| Felix Cameron | Young Eli Bell | The central character during childhood. |
| Zac Burgess | Older Eli Bell | Eli in the later period of the story. |
| Lee Tiger Halley | August “Gus” Bell | Eli’s older brother, described by Netflix as poetic and clairvoyant, with selective mutism. |
| Phoebe Tonkin | Frankie Bell / Frances Bell | Eli and Gus’s mother. Netflix’s cast materials use both names: Tudum lists Frankie Bell, while the initial announcement called her Frances Bell. |
| Travis Fimmel | Lyle Orlik | Eli and Gus’s stepfather, a drug dealer. |
| Simon Baker | Robert Bell | Eli and Gus’s father. |
| Bryan Brown | Slim Halliday | An important adult in the boys’ lives; Netflix says the character is based on Arthur “Slim” Halliday. |
| Anthony LaPaglia | Tytus Broz | A figure central to the boys’ world. |
| Sophie Wilde | Caitlyn Spies | A member of the series’ adult network. |
Christopher James Baker also appears as Ivan Kroll, identified in a Netflix Tudum image caption. Netflix’s short main cast list does not include him, so the names above are a principal-character guide, not a complete list of every guest role. Netflix Tudum’s cast and premise guide provides further cast context.
How are the Bell family characters related?
- Eli Bell is the story’s central character, shown at two ages by Felix Cameron and Zac Burgess.
- August “Gus” Bell is Eli’s older brother.
- Frankie, also credited as Frances, Bell is their mother.
- Lyle Orlik is their stepfather.
- Robert Bell is their father.
The family’s circumstances place the boys in contact with adults such as Slim Halliday, Tytus Broz and Caitlyn Spies. Netflix describes the series as a coming-of-age story with a crime-thriller edge; that framing helps explain why the cast spans both the children’s family life and a wider, more dangerous adult world.

Where and when is Boy Swallows Universe set?
The story is set in Darra, a suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, during the 1980s. That fictional story setting should not be confused with the production locations: Netflix says the series was filmed in Brisbane and highlights real places connected with the source story, including Boggo Road Gaol, Brisbane City Hall Clock Tower and Que Huong Restaurant. A production location does not necessarily mean a scene depicts that exact place in the story. Netflix’s production feature discusses the Brisbane setting and filming.

Boy Swallows Universe adapts Trent Dalton’s novel of the same name. Netflix describes the book and series as fictionalized stories inspired by elements of Dalton’s atypical upbringing in Brisbane—not as a factual memoir of the whole plot. One specifically identified real-life connection is Slim Halliday: Netflix says the character is based on Arthur “Slim” Halliday, whom Dalton knew.

Dalton described the title’s meaning in Netflix’s production feature: “Boy Swallows Universe—the double meaning of that is you swallow the good stuff and you swallow the bad stuff and then you’ve got to spit it out as fireworks.” That is the author’s explanation of the title, rather than a claim that the series recounts events exactly as they happened.
Netflix’s 31 August 2022 production announcement described the project as an “8 part limited series” and named its initial principal cast. The announcement is useful for the original credits; Netflix’s later Tudum guide uses Frankie Bell for Tonkin’s character where the announcement used Frances Bell.
