The project was reported in development at Prime Video in 2023, with Edie Falco attached to return as Jackie Peyton, but the outlet said there had been no updates since that initial announcement. The available reporting does not confirm that the series has been greenlit, cancelled, or begun filming.
Is the Nurse Jackie sequel still happening?
Its status remains unconfirmed. TV Insider’s March 9, 2026 report described the sequel or revival as a project reported in development at Prime Video in 2023 and noted that no further updates had followed. That is not the same as a formal greenlight, and a lack of news is not confirmation of cancellation.

The reporting does not establish a production start, release window, episode count, final title, or complete cast. Falco was attached to reprise Jackie, but that alone does not establish a full cast commitment. There is also no confirmed release date to report.
What did Edie Falco say about the update?
The March 2026 status report does not provide a newer Falco statement confirming that the sequel is cancelled or explaining a change in its status. The headline’s “disappointing update” refers to the lack of visible progress since the 2023 development report, not an announcement that the project has ended.

Why a sequel could continue the story
The original series ended with Jackie’s fate unresolved
Nurse Jackie ran for seven seasons, from 2009 to 2015. Showtime announced in 2014 that season seven would be the final season. In the series finale, Jackie overdoses at All Saints, but the episode does not definitively show whether she lives or dies.
That ambiguity reflected different creative views. Showrunner and finale co-writer Clyde Phillips said he believed Jackie survives. TV Insider quoted him describing his aim as leaving viewers with an ambiguous, thought-provoking ending: “When the credits rolled, I wanted people to lean forward and talk about what they just saw.” Edie Falco, by contrast, said in a 2016 Television Academy interview that she wanted Jackie to die. Those are contrasting interpretations and preferences—not a settled answer from the finale.
Will there be a Nurse Jackie season 8?
There is no confirmed season-eight order. The proposed project has been described as a sequel or revival, but no reporting cited here establishes its official format or episode count. Because the original series ended after its seventh and final season, calling the proposed continuation “season 8” is a convenient shorthand, not a confirmed production label.

Prime Video was the platform associated with the project when it was reported in development in 2023. The available status report does not confirm a greenlight, production schedule, or premiere on Prime Video, so the platform mention should not be read as a release announcement.
