Amazon confirmed that Rory Kinnear portrays Tom Bombadil. The character, familiar to readers of Tolkien, had not appeared in a live-action screen adaptation before this series. Amazon’s first-look article announced the casting and described it as Bombadil’s screen debut.
Why is Tom Bombadil in a story set in the Second Age?
Season 2 is set in Tolkien’s Second Age, thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, according to Amazon’s season guide. Bombadil comes from Tolkien’s wider writings, so his appearance is an adaptation choice within the series’ earlier historical setting; it does not mean the show is directly adapting the same events as the later books.
Showrunner J.D. Payne described Bombadil as “sort of an anti-dramatic character,” explaining: “He’s not a character who has a particularly strong agenda. He observes drama, but largely doesn’t participate in it.” Co-showrunner Patrick McKay added that Bombadil gives characters knowledge that is “not particularly relevant to anything that they’re doing or about to do.” These comments, reported by Amazon, point to an adaptation challenge: a character who tends to observe rather than drive events has a different role from a conventional story protagonist.

Do you need to read Tolkien before watching?
