Star Trek: Section 31 asks viewers to accept a secretive organization willing to work outside ordinary Federation rules—a premise that can sit uneasily beside Star Trek’s ideals of equality, peace and cooperation. In a January 22, 2025 interview, cast members Rob Kazinsky, Omari Hardwick and Kacey Rohl, along with executive producer Alex Kurtzman, explained why they believe that tension belongs in the franchise. Their case rests on defending ideals, redemption and an adventurous tone; it does not guarantee that skeptical viewers will find the film convincing.
Why Section 31 can feel at odds with Star Trek
Section 31’s covert, rule-breaking role creates the central friction: the Federation presents itself through public ideals, while this organization operates in the shadows. The January 22, 2025 Gizmodo/io9 interview frames the movie as a different perspective within Star Trek and addresses fans who question whether that perspective belongs in the franchise. It does not establish that every fan is nervous or measure audience opinion.
The resulting question is not simply whether Section 31 is good or bad. It is whether a society committed to cooperation can coexist with people who use secretive methods to protect it—and what those methods might cost.
How the cast argues for the story
Rob Kazinsky: ideals take effort to defend
Kazinsky, who plays Zeph, argues that equality and peace do not arise without struggle. He connects Section 31’s appeal to stories about threats and political conflicts beyond the Federation’s protected sphere. In his view, the organization gives the film a way to consider the work of preserving an ideal society. That is Kazinsky’s defense of the premise, not proof that Section 31’s methods are justified.

“You don’t reach the Federation’s levels of equality, and kindness, and peace, and all of these beautiful things without fighting for it. And to fight for it and get it, then you have to fight to keep it.”
—Rob Kazinsky, who plays Zeph
Omari Hardwick: equality and redemption under pressure
Hardwick, who plays team leader Alok, says the film tests whether egalitarianism and equality can exist. He also links its redemption theme to conflicts people face in the world around them. His comments place the story’s political question alongside a personal one: whether people can change after doing harm.

What Alex Kurtzman says about the movie’s tone
Executive producer Alex Kurtzman frames Section 31 as a conversation about whether the Federation’s ideals can coexist with people operating in the shadows to protect it. He says the production wanted to address fan concerns and describes the intended experience as adventurous and emotional, with darkness that does not make the film dark overall.
“This movie is fun, and it’s funny, and it’s an adventure and it’s emotional—and it touches on darkness but I don’t think it’s a dark movie.”
—Alex Kurtzman, executive producer
That is the production’s stated goal, not a settled verdict on how the finished film feels to each viewer. The tension between an optimistic public vision and covert methods remains the question the story asks its audience to weigh.
