The First 15 DC Superheroes in Chronological Order: What the Record Supports

DC’s early comic history includes western, espionage, detective, and supernatural leads before Superman. Here are the verified publication landmarks—and why the first 15 depends on what counts as a superhero.

There is no well-supported, definitive ranking of the first 15 DC superheroes by first appearance. The answer depends on what counts as a superhero: DC’s pre-Superman comics included western and espionage leads, detectives, and a supernatural investigator, but not all fit the modern genre. Here, “chronological order” means first comic-book publication appearance—not the order of events in the stories. The surviving official landmarks clarify the early history, but they do not establish 15 superhero-qualified debuts.

Why a definitive first 15 is difficult to establish

DC’s historical accounts document several early characters and issue landmarks, but they do not provide a consistent, verified list of 15 characters who each qualify as superheroes at debut. A chronology of early DC comics is therefore not the same thing as a ranking of superheroes. It can include anthology leads in western, espionage, and detective stories, as well as supporting figures, unless the eligibility rule is stated.

The distinction matters because the word “superhero” can be used narrowly for a costumed crime-fighter with extraordinary abilities, or more broadly for earlier figures later grouped into the genre. DC’s history of characters who appeared before Superman and its Superman character page illustrate that difference.

Early DC publication milestones

These are documented landmarks, not a ranked top 15. The publication dates below use the year and issue information supported by DC’s historical pages; they do not imply that every character listed is a superhero.

Publication landmark Characters or event What the record establishes
New Fun Comics #1 (1935) Jack Woods; Sandra of the Secret Service DC identifies Woods as the first character to appear in a DC comic book and Sandra as the first female to star in her own DC story. Woods was a western lawman and Sandra an espionage heroine, not straightforward modern costumed superheroes. DC’s history of five pre-Superman characters.
New Fun Comics #6 (1935) Doctor Occult (Richard Occult) DC identifies this as Doctor Occult’s debut. Some early stories showed him in blue tights and a red cape; DC says some comic-book scholars regard him as the first caped superhero. His exact publication month is not established by the cited account. DC’s history of five pre-Superman characters.
More Fun Comics #14 (1936) Zator and Koth DC’s continuity history places them in Doctor Occult-related material. The source does not establish them as standalone superheroes. DC’s “The Platinum Age Heroes” history.
New Adventure Comics #12 (1937) Jor-L Jor-L appeared as a futuristic space cop in a Steve Carson story. He is distinct from Superman’s Kryptonian father. DC’s “The Platinum Age Heroes” history and DC’s pre-Superman history.
More Fun Comics #19 (1937) Rose Psychic DC describes her as Doctor Occult’s female counterpart. That description alone does not establish a superhero classification. DC’s “The Platinum Age Heroes” history.
Detective Comics #1 (1937) Speed Saunders (Cyril Saunders); Slam Bradley (Samuel Bradley) Both characters began in this issue. They were detective/adventure leads, not straightforward costumed superheroes at debut. DC also identifies other characters appearing in the issue, including Chin Lung and Shorty Morgan. DC’s pre-Superman history and DC’s continuity history.
Action Comics #1 (1938) Superman (Clark Kent / Kal-El) DC identifies this as Superman’s first appearance and calls him the world’s first Super Hero. This is the clearest official answer when “superhero” means the recognizable modern genre. Superman | Official DC Character.
All-Star Comics #3 (1940) Justice Society of America The JSA’s first appearance was a team milestone, not an individual character debut. DC describes it as history’s first team of superheroes. Justice Society of America | Official DC Character.

Who was DC’s first superhero?

There are two defensible answers, depending on the definition. Doctor Occult is an early candidate for the first caped superhero: DC places his debut in New Fun Comics #6 and notes the cape-and-tights costume in some early stories, while attributing the “first caped superhero” view to some scholars. Superman is DC’s official answer for the first Super Hero: the publisher’s character page identifies his debut in Action Comics #1 (1938) and calls him the world’s first Super Hero.

Those claims address different thresholds rather than contradicting each other. Doctor Occult’s status rests on a broader early-costume category; DC’s Superman designation marks the emergence of the iconic superhero model. The label should not be applied automatically to every earlier adventure or detective character.

How to read the chronology without mixing categories

  • Use first publication appearance. A character’s earliest documented issue is the basis for chronology, not later continuity placement or the date of events within a story.
  • Classify the debut, not the later reputation. Distinguish a western or espionage protagonist, detective, supernatural investigator, supporting figure, and costumed superhero.
  • Keep team history separate. The Justice Society’s 1940 debut follows many individual characters and records a team’s first appearance, not a new individual’s debut.
  • Do not infer eligibility from continuity. A later connection to the DC Universe does not, by itself, make an earlier character a superhero.

Where to read Superman’s earliest stories

DC describes The Superman Chronicles Vol. 1 as collecting early Superman stories from Action Comics #1–13, New York World’s Fair #1, and Superman #1, covering 1938–1939 and arranged by publication chronology. It is a publication-order route into Superman’s early adventures, not a collection of all early DC characters or evidence for a 15-entry superhero ranking.
