Its exact inventor is uncertain: George Renninger of Philadelphia’s Wunderle Candy Company is often credited in oral histories, while Goelitz helped popularize the confection in 1898 as “Chicken Feed.” Candy corn’s close association with Halloween came later, strengthening as trick-or-treating grew in the 1950s.
Who invented candy corn?
No surviving, established account proves who invented candy corn or exactly when. The familiar story credits George Renninger, a candymaker associated with Philadelphia’s Wunderle Candy Company in the 1880s. But the Library of Congress says a Wunderle candymaker is “sometimes credited,” and HISTORY describes the origin as uncertain. It is more accurate to call Renninger the conventional attribution than a confirmed inventor.
The setting is clearer than the origin story. In the late 19th century, confectioners made molded sweets resembling agricultural products—including pumpkins, chestnuts, and turnips—for rural children. Candy corn fit into this farm-themed confectionery tradition.
What was candy corn originally called?
In 1898, Goelitz Confectionery Company helped bring candy corn to a wider public, marketing it as “Chicken Feed.” Its packaging used a rooster and the slogan “Something worth crowing for,” reinforcing the candy’s agricultural theme. The Library of Congress identifies 1898 as the year Goelitz brought the candy to the masses; HISTORY also describes the company’s marketing. Library of Congress · HISTORY

How did candy corn become a Halloween candy?
Candy corn was not originally exclusive to Halloween. It circulated as a penny candy and appeared in seasonal contexts beyond the holiday, at a time when Halloween was not yet as strongly centered on packaged candy.
Its Halloween identity grew in the 1950s, alongside the rise of trick-or-treating in the United States. The Library of Congress connects the shift to the growth of trick-or-treating; HISTORY reports that candy corn advertising began to spike dramatically in October during that decade. This was a gradual change in how the candy was marketed and understood, not evidence that Halloween was its original purpose.

That milestone falls between Goelitz’s 1898 promotion and candy corn’s stronger Halloween association several decades later. Library of Congress · HISTORY · Associated Press
How is candy corn made?
The basic method—layering differently colored candy into kernel-shaped molds—has endured, though machinery has replaced much of the manual work. The University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences describes the early process: workers called “stringers” walked backward while pouring viscous candy into cornstarch trays imprinted with kernel shapes. Modern machines deposit the three colors of mellowcreme into molds, where the candy cools. The finished pieces are polished with confectioner’s glaze. UGA says the core process has changed little since the 1900s.

In UGA’s account, the sugar mixture is cooked to the soft-to-hard-ball range, around 235–245°F. That temperature describes the process reported by the university, not a universal specification for every manufacturer or recipe. University of Georgia CAES

University of Georgia food-science professor William Kerr describes the flavor as a buttercream-like mix of sugar, butter, honey, and vanilla, with honey present as a subtle note in some versions. He characterizes the texture as firm and chewy, slightly hard on the outside, and comparable to a firm marshmallow. That is an expert description, not a guarantee that every brand—or every eater—will experience it the same way.
The candy’s polarizing reputation is part of its cultural story: the same sweetness and chewy texture that make it recognizable are also why people have strong opinions about it.
