WWE said he was returning to Japan to write a book and news columns; in a later interview, Tajiri was also reported to have cited writing, journalism and wanting to be closer to his family. The available accounts point to personal priorities—not an established contract dispute or confirmed burnout—as the reason for his departure.
What WWE said when Tajiri left
WWE’s December 2005 announcement, reproduced by Inside Pulse on December 11, 2005, said: “Tajiri has decided to go back to his native Japan to work on writing a book. In addition, Tajiri plans to write news columns upon his return.” The notice described an agreed release and said his final appearance would be the December 12 episode of Raw in Boston.
That is the clearest contemporaneous public explanation: Tajiri was returning to Japan to pursue writing. The statement is attributed to WWE, not to a named executive or to Tajiri directly.
What Tajiri later said about his reasons
A later Bola na Rede interview reportedly adds personal context. In response to a question about leaving WWE in 2005, Tajiri was reported as saying that he wanted to spend more time on writing and journalism, including wrestling-related writing, and to be closer to his family in Japan. This is a paraphrase of the interview’s indexed text, not a verified verbatim quotation.

Was burnout or a dispute the reason?
Some secondary accounts at the time attributed Tajiri’s departure to burnout. However, WWE’s contemporaneous statement emphasized his plans to write, and the later reported account emphasized writing and family. The available evidence does not establish burnout or a contract dispute as the cause, so neither should be presented as settled fact.
How Tajiri’s WWE exit fits his career
Tajiri began wrestling in the United States with ECW in late 1998. After ECW closed in 2001, he signed with WWE and began there in May of that year. WWE’s profile of Tajiri describes a style that shifted between martial-arts intensity and comedy, highlighted by his distinctive ring work and green mist.

During his WWE run, he won the Cruiserweight Championship three times, as well as the Light Heavyweight, United States and tag-team championships. WWE also lists ECW Tag Team and Television championships among his career honors. His departure came after more than four years with the company.

WWE’s profile lists Tajiri in a June 2006 ECW One Night Stand tag match, teaming with Super Crazy against the FBI. That appearance took place after his formal December 2005 exit. A later match does not mean he remained a regular WWE performer or change the date of his release.
