The headline “The Engineering Subreddit Is Tearing Elon Musk Apart” refers to one r/engineering discussion—not a survey of engineers or evidence of a profession-wide verdict. In a thread asking experienced engineers for their opinions, a student expressed mixed feelings about Musk and the companies he leads. Replies included pointed criticism, but also praise, defenses and qualifications.
What the headline refers to
Futurism’s Dan Robitzski published the article “The Engineering Subreddit Is Tearing Elon Musk Apart,” updated April 26, 2021. It covered an r/engineering post titled “Experienced Engineers: What’s your opinion of Elon Musk?” The student who started the thread said Musk and other technology leaders had initially inspired them to study engineering, but that their views had become mixed. They asked engineers with industry experience to weigh in. Read Futurism’s coverage and see the original Reddit discussion.
The title’s forceful wording describes the tenor of a particular online conversation. It does not establish what engineers generally think, and the thread was not a poll or representative survey.
What commenters criticized
Some commenters questioned Musk’s marketing and public claims, saying they believed capabilities or timelines were sometimes overstated. One Reddit user quoted in Futurism put the criticism this way: “He’s great at marketing, but says a lot of stupid shit and can’t take constructive criticism.” That is one commenter’s opinion, not an independently established assessment of Musk.

Other replies raised concerns about demanding work, burnout, training, team integration and workplace culture at Tesla or SpaceX. Futurism also recounted one commenter’s secondhand account that launch engineers moved to SpaceX and allegedly regretted it. Those comments are individual opinions and anecdotes; neither the article nor the Reddit thread independently investigates company policy or establishes workforce conditions.
Why the discussion was not wholly negative
The student’s opening post acknowledged the companies’ technical accomplishments, particularly SpaceX, while voicing concerns about credit, timelines, treatment of factory workers and stock-market conduct. Some replies sharply criticized Musk’s claims and work environments; others emphasized the companies’ accomplishments or offered a more qualified view of ambitious targets and technical development. The discussion therefore reflects a range of responses to the student’s question, rather than a single unanimous judgment.

How to read the story today
Futurism’s article was updated on April 26, 2021. It is historical coverage of a Reddit conversation, not a newly verified account of 2026 opinion or company conditions. Its useful takeaway is narrower: a student asked experienced engineers for their views, and the replies recorded in that thread included serious criticism as well as defenses and nuance. The source does not support turning those replies into a claim about engineers as a whole.
