It can heighten a show’s lighting, effects and camera movement, but it cannot substitute for the animation underneath. In a 2024 interview, Castlevania directors Samuel and Adam Deats explain why the balance is a creative choice—and why similarities between animated shows can arise from several overlapping production pressures.
What is compositing in animation?
Samuel Deats, a director at Powerhouse Animation, describes compositing as bringing the background, animation and camera work together and making them “time out and play properly.” In practical terms, it is the stage where separate visual elements are assembled and adjusted to function as a finished shot. The 2024 io9 interview with Samuel and Adam Deats and supervising editor David Howe uses this definition to push back on a simple “animation versus compositing” debate.
Does compositing count as animation?
They are related parts of production, but they are not interchangeable. Animation creates movement; compositing assembles and shapes the visual layers around that movement. Adam Deats says camera movement, lighting and effects can supplement the animators’ work. A shot may use those elements to add depth, focus attention or establish mood, while the underlying movement remains the work of the animation team.
Can compositing make animation look better—or overwhelm it?
It can do either, depending on the choices made for a project. More camera motion, lighting effects or image treatment may make a sequence feel expansive and dynamic, but those elements can also draw attention away from the animation they are meant to support. The Deats brothers describe this as a matter of emphasis and readability, not a universal rule that more compositing produces better results.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Adam Deats compares the role of Ufotable’s photography department to compositing in American animation terminology, and notes how extensive compositing can work alongside dynamic 3D camera work, lighting and effects. That is his analogy, not a full description of Ufotable’s production pipeline. The broader lesson is that the same toolset can serve different visual goals: one show may foreground expressive drawing, another may lean into atmosphere or camera movement.
Why do some animated shows look alike?
The Deats brothers point to a cluster of influences rather than one studio, technique or software package. Their account in the io9 interview includes the style references a client requests, the artists available, digital cleanup practices, compositing conventions, outsourcing, budgets, schedules and labor pressure. Creators also influence one another, so visual ideas can circulate across productions.

These are the directors’ observations, not a quantified survey of the animation industry. They do not establish that every production shares the same pipeline or that one factor explains a particular resemblance. Similar-looking choices may reflect a familiar reference, a standardized workflow, practical limits on time and staff, or several of these at once. The interview mentions South Korean and Japanese cleanup pipelines and work moving among studios, but does not provide a complete vendor list or season-by-season breakdown for Castlevania.
How does Netflix’s Castlevania use the games?
Netflix’s 2017 announcement described the series as inspired by Konami’s classic game series, named Warren Ellis as writer and credited Powerhouse Animation with production services. Netflix’s announcement establishes the adaptation’s source and production context; it does not mean the show directly reproduces every game plot or design.

In a 2021 interview, the directors said Trevor Belmont, Sypha and Alucard draw from Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, while Saint Germain comes from Castlevania: Curse of Darkness. They describe a visual approach that combines the games’ dark-fantasy tone and character designs with other influences. Their GameSpot interview also says they remained involved with animation and post-production, while some pre-production material was sent overseas—a description of their process at that time, not a complete map of every season’s work.

The Deats brothers’ comments are useful for understanding why compositing matters and why visual similarities are rarely explained by a single cause. They do not offer a measured ranking of animation quality, a production budget or staffing figures for Castlevania, or a formula that other shows should follow. Their clearest point is that each project calls for its own balance: composition can amplify the animation, but the result depends on the creative choices and production conditions behind the whole image.
