Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer did not publicly give a specific reason for their separation. In their 2016 joint statement, they announced the decision after “much soul searching and consideration” and focused on raising their children together. An October 2016 report citing unnamed sources described the breakup as gradual, not the result of one dramatic event—but that was not an explanation confirmed by either of them.
What did Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer say about the split?
When the couple announced their separation on October 18, 2016, they said: “After much soul searching and consideration we have made the decision to separate as a couple.” They added: “As devoted parents, our first priority remains raising our children together with enduring love, respect and friendship.” ABC News reproduced the statement.
The statement did not identify a private cause or describe a particular event behind the decision. It established that they had decided to separate and emphasized their shared commitment as parents; it did not say more about why their relationship ended.
What explanation did reports give?
An October 18, 2016 Entertainment Tonight report attributed its account to unnamed sources. Those sources characterized the split as something that unfolded over time, saying the two had changed and grown apart and that it was not prompted by one dramatic incident.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That account is attributed reporting, not a public explanation from Maguire or Meyer. The most accurate answer to “the real reason” is therefore that the former spouses did not publicly specify one; the gradual-drift explanation came from anonymous sources.
Separation and divorce timeline
- 2003: Entertainment Tonight reported that Maguire and Meyer first met that year. ABC News said they were first linked four years before they married.
- September 2007: They married in Hawaii.
- October 18, 2016: They publicly announced their separation after nine years of marriage. They have two children, Ruby and Otis.
- October 2020: Meyer filed for divorce, according to a later report.
- September 21, 2026: A dissolution judgment reportedly terminated their marital status. A news report published October 2, 2026, said the judgment was filed October 1 and that other matters remained reserved for the court. Just Jared reported these details, citing court documents obtained by Page Six; the court record itself is not directly linked here.
Why the distinction matters
The 2016 announcement concerned their separation; Meyer’s 2020 filing and the reported 2026 judgment concern the later legal process. Neither the public statement nor the cited reports establish a specific private cause. The anonymous-source account offers context, but it should not be mistaken for a confirmed statement by either former spouse.
