The prize’s end did not end literary translation in India, but it did remove the award, its cash prizes and the attention it directed toward translated fiction. No public explanation for the shutdown has been established.
What ended with the JCB Prize?
The prize ran for seven successive years, from its launch in 2018 through the 2024 award. It brought English-original Indian fiction and English translations of fiction originally written in Indian languages into the same competition. Its rules also encouraged publishers to submit translated work: in the early years, two of each publisher’s four submission slots were reserved for translations and could not be reassigned to English-original books. A 2026 scholarly analysis describes the prize as both a way of making a multilingual literary field visible through English and a system that made English the medium through which those works competed for recognition.
- The annual award: The competition and its shortlist-and-longlist platform ended with the 2024 edition.
- The prize money: During the prize’s run, the winning writer received ₹25 lakh; when the winning book was translated, its translator received ₹10 lakh, according to Scroll.in’s 2025 account.
- A submission incentive: Publishers lost a named award that gave them a reason to submit and promote translated fiction alongside English-original novels.
That is not the same as translation ending. Books continue to be translated and published; what disappeared was this particular annual competition and the visibility and incentives attached to it.
Who won the final JCB Prize?
Upamanyu Chatterjee won the 2024 prize for Lorenzo Searches for the Meaning of Life, the last winner in the award’s history. The seven winning books were:

Across the seven years, five of the seven winners were translated books, and 19 of the 36 shortlisted titles were translations, according to Scroll.in’s feature on the prize’s legacy. Those figures show how central translation was to the award, without implying that every translated book or language was represented equally.
Why was the JCB Prize discontinued?
The public sources reviewed do not establish a reason. On 21 June 2025, literary director Mita Kapur confirmed the shutdown to The Indian Express, saying, “The prize has been shut down,” and declining further comment.

A separate official notice dated 12 March 2025 records that JCB Literature Foundation applied to the Registrar of Companies to revoke its licence under Section 8(5) of the Companies Act, 2013. The notice says the company would have to replace “Foundation” with “Private Limited” in its name if the licence were cancelled. It lists proposed objects that include literary awards or prizes, libraries, sponsorship, support for writers and translators, and literary events. The notice documents a licence application and the objects listed in it; it does not announce the prize’s closure or explain the decision. Read the Foundation’s Form INC-19 notice.
There was also public criticism of the sponsor. Scroll.in reported that more than 120 writers, translators and publishers signed a 2024 open letter criticizing JCB, amid controversy over JCB machinery being used in demolitions. That context is not evidence that the criticism caused the prize to end; neither the reported statement nor the official notice gives a reason.

What did the prize achieve—and what should not be overstated?
The award gave writers and, for translated winning books, translators a substantial purse. It also gave publishers a recurring reason to put translated fiction forward. In Arunava Sinha’s assessment for Scroll.in, the prize helped build expectations around new editions and draw renewed attention to translated fiction. He argues that publishers, writers and translators may feel its loss most directly, with readers affected less directly. These are an informed observer’s judgments, not measured estimates of the prize’s market impact.
The award’s influence should not be confused with guaranteed commercial success. Scroll.in reported that no official sales figures for JCB-winning books were available and relayed informal publisher feedback that winners had not become breakout successes. That does not establish a precise sales result for the books as a group.

The JCB closure came amid other prize endings, but those histories are separate and were not caused by it. Scroll.in’s 2025 feature says the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature ended after its 2019 awards, while the Hindu Literary Prize ran from 2010 to 2019. The same account said the Crossword and Sahitya Akademi awards continued at the time it was published.

A later example is the Romain Rolland Book Prize, a distinct award celebrating French-language literature in Indian languages. The French Institute in India says it concluded with its 2025 edition after eight editions. It is not a JCB successor.
What support for translation and writers continues?
Ending a prize does not mean every related literary initiative has stopped. The programs below have different purposes and should not be treated as replacements for the JCB Prize.
| Initiative | Status and focus | How it differs from JCB |
|---|---|---|
| French Institute in India translation activity | The Institute says the Romain Rolland Prize ended with its 2025 edition. It is focusing on translator training, mentoring and support, and announced a new translation initiative linked to the Goncourt Choice of India in 2026. | Related activity in French–Indian literary exchange, not an equivalent Indian-fiction award or a successor to JCB. French Institute in India |
| PM-YUVA 3.0 | The Government of India describes a young-author mentorship scheme with six months of mentorship and financial assistance of ₹50,000 per month for six months, alongside multilingual publication and promotion and opportunities to appear at literary festivals and international forums. | A young-author development scheme, not a comparable prize for literary fiction. Press Information Bureau |
These initiatives show that translator support and author development can continue in other forms. They do not restore the JCB Prize’s combined role: an annual fiction award with a substantial purse and a dedicated place for English translations of Indian-language literature.
